Aquired a stray kitten - what do i do?

Hello!

I'm heading back home after a weekend away and my housemate phoned earlier to let me know he'd rescued a stray kitten from a fox and there is now a kitten in my house. Blush

I know nothing about cats. He's going to take it to the vet tomorrow and see if it's chipped. If it's not then god knows what we do with it.

I know nothing at all about cats. What does he need? Is cat food from the corner shop okay or do kittens need special food? Can he drink milk or just water? I can't give him exercise because I've no garden and i expect he'll run away again.

Thanks Kitty lovers!

If it doesn't firm up soon our vet recommended ProKolin when we took on a stray with a dodgy tummy. There was an acute one which helped a little and then a long term one which she needed for about 6 months but then after a gradually decreasing dose she was fine. Also put her on a gluten free diet. She had been eating an awful diet for a cat much of it stolen from the dc's plates of basically anything she could get hold of including pasta, bread, crisps etc until her owners agreed to hand her over to us. Now she won't touch it, although still partial to a bit of duck if she can persuade someone to part with some.

Lemon easy to fall in love with a cute kitten!

However, you have to think short and long-term.

Are you living in rented accommodation? Your landlord may not want a cat in the flat, most are "anti"

Are you likely to move flats in the next few years? If so, you'll find a much smaller choice because of above point.

If you and flat mate part ways, new flat mate may not like/want a cat. What then?

I suspect if my flatmate left, Murphy would go with him. My landlord is actually my Dad who tolerates animals because I already have the buns. My plan is to ultimately move to Cornwall and get a dog. I don't want a cat really, as lovely as he is, but if my housemate wants to keep him on the understanding he's his responsibility I suppose we could consider it.

Oh god, why am I even thinking this?!?!

Tiny cat has poisoned brain.

Of COURSE you want a cat. You are just in the denial phase.

SillyMoomin · 04/04/2017 13:55

You know it. You just don't know you know it

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 04/04/2017 14:05

if my housemate wants to keep him on the understanding he's his responsibility this is totally irrelevant. Murphy will choose who he wants as a slave. You have no say in the matter!

lemonzest123 · 04/04/2017 14:46

In that case it'll be my housemate as he is completely babying him and giving him attention every time he miaows (i.e constantly).

He's just text me to say that he's bought a scratching post, asking if cats can use facetime and he's worried about Murphy growing up spoilt.

I'm worried about bloody Murphy growing up and eating my rabbits Sad

Some of us called timber when you said he had a name. You name it, you're keeping it.

Murphy needs his balls off though, full toms don't live long because they roam off looking for girl cats & get run over.

Adult buns are quite strong, most cats are punching above their weight with an adult rabbit.

You named the kitten straightaway OP. The kitten is staying Grin.

lemonzest123 · 04/04/2017 18:38

Update! Murphy's owner rang!! He's going home Grin

That's great news, means you can rescue another kitty now 😃.

lemonzest123 · 04/04/2017 18:43

Hahaha no thanks but I wish the lovely critter well and have a slightly revised opinion of cats now!

Hope you got proof they are the true owner!

lemonzest123 · 04/04/2017 18:49

Yeah I asked for photos, it's him! Apparently his brothers and the lady's kids miss him loads

Vinorosso74 · 04/04/2017 20:54

Aw, well done for taking care of him. I hope they get him chipped now.

HopefulHamster · 04/04/2017 20:59

Your housemate is going to be after getting a kitten now!

Toddlerteaplease · 05/04/2017 18:09
