Help. I can't cope with this anymore

I'm at a total loss as to what to do. Rehomed kitten from RSPCA in Nov last year, to discover she was riddled with Giardia. We have had countless courses of Panacur/Metronidazole and it's just not getting any better. EVERY morning I'm getting up to piles of diarrhoea on the carpet and I just don't know how much more I can cope with. Vets bills are astronomical because insurance hadn't kicked in when I first took her to vets, so they consider it a pre-existing condition.
I've contacted the RSPCA as I feel they were incredibly irresponsible rehoming an unhealthy kitten, but short of saying they'd take her back they've refused to help further.
I don't know what to do. Someone please help because I just can't think straight at the minute

Nothing further to add to the great advice about food and antibiotics from pp, but I think separating her from your other cat at night is important.
My male brothers have been fighting on and off for months. When they are going through a bad patch the 'beta' male becomes very stressed and needs to have separate safe spaces away from his more dominant brother, especially at night when we aren't there to intervene.
If the symptoms aren't present during the day when she is with you it could be a stress response, as well as food intolerance.
A family member contracted giardia and it's truly horrible. Their digestive system has never really recovered so will be googling ongoing carb intolerance!
Very best of luck, it's a difficult situation to manage. No judgement from me either if you feel there is no other option than to euthanise, but I really hope some of the strategies work.

Well, while she's not exactly loving being crated at night, it does seem to be working. Have also changed her food and keeping her away from dry food. I think it's the evil Siamese that's the problem!
I know people have said they wouldn't judge, but there's no way I'd even consider putting her to sleep, unless she was in pain or suffering. Which she doesn't seem to be. Thank you for all the advice, it's greatly appreciated.

That's a good update. If you want to allow the Siamese to eat dry without her getting it you can buy a microchip activated cat food bowl.

Thanks tcn but I have 6 altogether! I've put the dry food up where the others can get it but kitten can't. Not a long term solution but works for now!

Those microchip feeders can be programmed with the chips of a large number of cats (I forget the exact amount), so it could still be an option for the future.

A pp mentioned the probiotic paste, Pro-Kolin. I used it when Little M had loose, stinky stools when he first came to live with me. Not sure if it was the new environment, gradual change of diet that caused it. But the paste couldn't hurt... esp. if kitten's been on antibiotics? Stomach might need some fauna/flora re-adjustment?

My cat had giardia and was cured but still contined to have chronic disgusting diarrhoea everywhere including all over a box full of my shoes.
Turns out the giardia had damaged her intestines and she was now sensitive to almost every cat food especially felix.
I had her on the gastric diet from the vet for a month but I couldn't afford it long term so I tried a variety of foods and finally found Iams dry food worked pretty well.
Quite honestly I didn't feel the vet gave me any advice at all I really had to do all the research myself.
Try the gastric diet from the vet first and have they tested the cats poo to see if she still has giardia? Repeated antibiotics can also give cats chronic diarrhoea so the poor little thing is probably feeling awful.
The vet was constantly pumping my cat full of antibiotics and steroids instead of trying to find out the root cause of the problem but I made them stop because steroids can induce diabetes.
My cat is now manageable and no longer goes to the toilet all over the house.

I've stopped all medication, taken away the dry food and changed her wet food. She's quite happy being caged overnight and is now using the litter tray. Diarrhoea seems to be clearing up. I do think the majority of it was down to aforementioned evil Siamese. Happy that she's improving for now. And is currently curled up asleep on my lap Smile. Here's hoping the combination of all the suggestions on here continues to work!

Oh she's adorable. Pleased it seems to be getting better, fingers crossed for you!

Littlemissindependent · 03/04/2017 09:35

Update! Diarrhoea has completely cleared up. Don't know whether it's down to change in food or stopping medication but it's gone! Still being caged overnight so the evil Siamese can't get her, which seems to be working well. I do believe she may even be gaining weight at last! Thank you all for the brilliant advice you have!
