The litter tray

Bengal consideration, am I stupid?

Colleague at work needs to re-home her 8yr old Bengal due to family illness.

I lost 2 beautiful elderly cats at the end of 2016 and am left with 10yr and 15yr old females. The 15yr old, has stepped into the void that my boy left and has become very affectionate, the 10yr old is very much on her terms!

I've always wanted a Bengal having had a semi-intelligent cat before but I just don't know about introducing such a cat into the home with the other 2 at that age.

I've approached my husband who said No, No, No, oh go on then!

Anyone have any experience and can advise. I know they are a handful and need to be indoors which is ok as the other 2 don't go out that much. The house is big enough for them to have their own space but these 2 have grown up together and I've never introduced a middle aged cat.

Help me decide please Smile

I have a rescue bengal who is very loud, beats up all the neighborhood cats and brings me a variety of 'gifts' including birds (dead or alive), frogs, live mice, and her biggest donation to the household was a very beautiful koi carp Blush. She also steals sachets of cat food from somewhere and brings them home saves me a small fortune.

In November she disappeared and despite searching, leaflet drops etc. we finally accepted after 6 weeks that she had been hit by a car and died. Then we got a phone call to say she had been handed in to the RSPCA over 20 miles away! I have a sneaking suspicion that she was catnapped but the culprit couldn't cope with her yelling and demands for constant food Grin.

I had one. I took him on as a relative got two and found them to be extremely territorial and attention seeking. Lots of pissing all over, scratching, vocalisation.

It became unbearable. Wandering round yelling at 3am, shorted the electrics four times pissing on stuff, constantly wanting to be picked up.

Once he was with us as an only cat he settled right down. had a huge outdoor territory, and spent many happy hours following me round chatting, talking to the neighbours, and getting lots of fuss from passers by. The pissing and very demanding behaviour stopped completely.

So while I'd take one on again, I would definitely not do it if you have other cats or live in a high density cat area.

Queen thankfully we are not hoarders and don't have much in the way of ornaments but I understand they are climbers so will take that into consideration!

Don't what a beauty!

Really we have a tabby that rules the neighbourhood and beats on our patio doors to fight the youngest through the glass! I will take that into consideration as I don't want to upset the calm my 2 have at the moment.

How long does it take to see if cats are going to get on? If I like his nature, I wonder about a trial period to see how these 2 react to an older cat albeit younger than them.

They do get everywhere and love being up high. They have been known to unshelve books one by one. I feel I should mention they are also extremely affectionate and their antics are usually cute and tolerable!

I wouldn't, mine is showing no sign of slowing down at 8. He's very dominant & pursues cat fights with gusto.

I have visions of him tormenting me like that cat in the video that went viral where it pushed the glass off the table despite being told not to Grin

You'll quickly learn not to leave beverages or drinks receptacles unattended Grin brute's favourite thing lately is waiting till I sit down and batting or climbing the blinds. He did it for a solid hour when the feliway ran out.

Yep, 5 years since mine died and i've inly just realised i still have completely bare windowsills, mantelpieces etc. No vases or ornaments on display.

I think he broke 5 vases of flowers before i gave up and just did without.

Oh and i don't keep glasses if water by the bed either. He learned very quickly that tipping that over my head woke me up...

We also have a ginger moggy who has fluff for brains. It took them about a year to start to tolerate each other, another six months to be able to be in the same room and recently they have progressed to sleeping on the same bed, all be it as far apart as possible. I think in another 5 or six years we may see them cuddle up together Grin

Slow progress then!!!

I learnt not to leave water by the side of the bed as my boy Dudley would stick his head in, get stuck, throw it onto the floor or if water level was high enough, drink it!

We had 2 Bengals, mother and son. Mother was definitely the boss, and the lead in anything naughty. She very much liked balancing on the top of doors. Unfortunately last year she had a stroke and we lost her Sad.

Son was so lost that we got 2 kittens (non Bengal) to keep him company. He went from laid back to ferocious and hated them on sight. Feliway Friends seemed to help, and 10 months on they are all best buddies. He does however shove girl kitten off the top of the 8ft cat tree if she dares to take "his" space. (and she doesn't learn).

They are all kept indoors. Bengal will stand on doorstep and look out of open door (mother shot out 3 times and had to be coaxed back in).

What if it doesn't work out?.

Ours cost £400 last year in uti because he fights with the cat next door.

He put the cat next door in hospital.

Just spoken to her and my best friends sister is taking all 3 of them. She's semi-retired and has always had cats for as long as I've known her so they will have a great home.

When they're settled I'll get a picture but now I get to be cool aunt and no flying books / ornaments Smile

OMG my tabby moggie (who I suspect has some if not all bengal in her) sleeps on the radiator - but has rejected the scarf I put to make it softer and sleeps on the hard fins.
