So bloody unfair

We got back from a weekend away yesterday and, as usual, Harry made a huge fuss of us. I gave him some of his favourite biscuits but he seemed reluctant to eat them so I put it down to the fact he'd eaten more biscuits than wet food while we were away.

The same thing happened later on so we took him to the vet this morning to have his teeth checked, as this is how we noticed his last infection. She checked him over and he's in good shape, including his gums and remaining teeth, but his jaw is unstable. The vet is looking into the possibility of a permanent wire or screw in the jaw, but this probably won't be possible because of the damage to his jaw from the infection.

What does he need to do to have a change of luck? He's absolutely fine in himself so there's no question of PTS but I am worried about the future. He's 12 years old so not young but not old theses days either. We're switching him to wet food only so the budget will take a hit but that's neither here nor there, he just won't be happy without his biscuits as he prefers them to wet food.

I'm don't really know why I've posted this, I think I just needed to share with fellow cat lovers!

Can you soak his biscuits to make them soft?

It may not, Pink. Once you're under the paw etc..............

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 16/03/2017 17:40

You could get him a cat dish with a timer on it, OP, for when you can't make it at lunchtime.
Look on the Pets at Home website. Hope this helps.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 16/03/2017 19:06

Thanks everyone. I'm going to try the semi soft biscuits as my attempt at softening them didn't meet with his lordship's approval.

The vet has phoned and said that if he really wants biscuits and won't eat wet then he can have them but we've got to obviously keep an eye on them and take him back if he has any problems and she'll look into referring him. I think she's under the paw as well...

I've just wasted £25- ordered some Hi Life soft kibble and a box of tuna pouches from Amazon. I'll report back tomorrow...

He wouldn't eat his dinner tonight until I got home and we went in the bathroom with me! DH had tried to convince him to eat by telling him if he didn't I'd be carting him off to the vet again. It's reached the stage we now try and bargain with the cat.

On a happier note, it's Harry's birthday today. Well the anniversary of his arrival here. 9 years ago DH got me the best birthday present ever!

You 'bargain' with the cat?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 16/03/2017 21:34

It seems to have reached that stage. Not that it gets us very far as he still does what he wants. Years ago I bought him a drinking bowl with 'The Boss' on it and I think he took it literally!

Gosh.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/03/2017 21:38

If ours is being stubborn I move his plate to a totally different room or the garden.

Suddenly it's tasty.

I hadn't thought about moving the bowl. We've got a one bed maisonette so we're a bit limited but definitely worth a try!

I am finding out things I was never aware of. Our fella won't eat anything that has been on his plate longer than ten minutes. Must try changing the position then. Or using a plate.

RubbishMantra · 16/03/2017 22:01

Oh no, poor Harry, (and you) problem after problem Sad

If it's any consolation, I do the verbal bargaining with neurotic MCat.

Off to make them their bed-time snack now. Blush

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 16/03/2017 22:15

Glad it's not just me Mantra!

I hope they enjoy their snack, what are they having? Harry still has his dinner left so nothing more for him tonight.

One positive to come out of today, we now have lovely clean net curtains and DH cleaned the windows. It's amazing what a pukey cat inspires you to do!

I thought I'd update about the Hi Life. The biscuits were not a success. In fact he looked as though I was trying to poison him. However, the Hi Life tuna Tempt Me pouches were a huge success and are now in rotation with the Natures Menu!

He seems to be OK having his biscuits for lunch, although I'm watching him like a hawk!

Oh no PinkSparklyPussyCat, I didn't realise this when you replied to my thread on insurance. Poor Harry!!

RubbishMantra · 21/03/2017 22:24

Pink, little M has Gourmet cat soup, with added warm boiled water. MCat has Gourmet Perle, with added warm water as supper. Not the best thing for them, but means I don't have to panic about their water intake. Oh no! I sound like a mad cat person reading that back. Hmm Grin

How's Harry doing now?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/03/2017 21:59

He's OK at the moment and seems to be able to eat James Wellbeloved fish biscuits without any problems. They are flat so I presume he can bite them ok.

I tried the Gourmet cat soup Mantra, not a success. My cat sitter collects food for a local charity and they've done quite well recently! At the moment Harry is having a mix of Natures Menu, Country Hunter and Hi Life with a few biscuits for lunch and he seems happy.

Tizzy, this is why I'm so glad I've got insurance! He's an expensive little beastie!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/03/2017 22:01

Oh and Mantra, there's nothing wrong with being a mad cat person, I feel as though I've found my people on the Litter Tray!

I may have had a flash of genius ( or it may be a stupid idea), toddler has mentioned that she uses special Persian food - I think it was Royal Canin- that has tiny pieces due to their little mouths. How about trying that? I'm sure you can request sample packs from the manufacturer. Looks and smells like biscuits, but so small he can't really chomp on it?!

Weedsnseeds1 · 23/03/2017 22:43

Or wrap his normal stuff in a teatowel and give it a few wacks with a rolling pin?

Toddlerteaplease · 23/03/2017 22:49

Yes. Royal Canin Persian adult. It's specially shaped for their flat faces. It's very small and flat. I've also given up on wet food for fatty as she'll eat a bit of pate but not enough. Tried wetting it, that didn't work either. She seems to be happily eating her biscuits. The vet said it wasn't the end of the world if it was all she'd eat. Might try crushing them a bit though.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/03/2017 22:50

I've spent a fortune on cat soup, pate, chunks in gravy etc etc and the little buggers are not keen!
