Prozac for cats

Yes, you read right Hmm
Has anyone used it? Vet has recommended it for overgrooming and the shouting
Happy to try alternatives but have done feliway, ovarid, clomicalm, and nearly every calmer the vet could find

I adore the lad to bits but he has been shouting for 90 mins tonight. He wants to go out, I won't let him because it's dark. If I let him out, he comes back in within 5 minutes screaming blue murder at me ConfusedConfused
If I remove him out the room he just shouts at himself in the mirror

Seconded. He's gorgeous! What beautiful loving chirrups. My cats have been doing this and playing with each other for the last hour or so (amusingly, they freaked out and stopped when they heard the video of your cat).

Im assuming the shouting isn't the chirruping you recorded but rather the 'meoOOOOllllwwww' (let me OUT and/or I want something, NOW) variety? Big Cat often does this in the summer and it drives me mad. I took to screening off the cat flap at night so that he couldn't physically see/get to what he wanted. Sounds as though you do this too (by shutting him in the living room)?

Have you tried ignoring him (ha!) so that he doesn't get any attention as a reward? Could toys/games/catnip distract him/divert his attention?

I've no experience with giving my cats Prozac, however I feel that I'd personally try to shy away from using it (human Prozac can cause side effects and it seems the cat variety can too:
pets.thenest.com/effects-prozac-given-cats-7261.html & www.petmd.com/pet-medication/fluoxetine). However, it does sound as though you've tried lots of alternatives and your vet must have considered the options/recommended it for a good reason. You might find that your cat has no side effects and it works like magic!

Good luck! I feel as though I'm going mad after I've endured more than one night of this behaviour. It sounds a bit silly saying 'I'm soooo tired, my CAT kept me up all night'. Even other cat owners don't always understand - I don't know what I'd do if it was constant - I really feel for you!

He does have mad expressive eyes, doesn't he? Grin

hollinhurst84 · 16/02/2017 11:51

He shouted from 7am - 11am so I got some sleep at least. We have had silence since 11am when I shouted at him to STFU
It's like he gets stuck in a loop and me shouting at him stops it Confused
Disclaimer I am not properly shouting at him but a loud OI STOP IT NOW seems to work

Does Prozac work straight away? Was it expensive?

hollinhurst84 · 17/02/2017 21:01

£3.70 something. He's started it... Better last night, I think he slept all night
I have 7 capsules which I have to empty out and divide into 4 as he gets 1/4 a day!

Well it's cheaper than zylkene. It sounds very fiddly but if you get results totally worth it.

hollinhurst84 · 17/02/2017 21:18

The clomicalm he was on was similar so I'm used to it now!
Had to dose stable cat today too Sad she's been fighting

Poor girl, she looks very put out. It's odd to see her looking less than in control.

LanaorAna1 · 18/02/2017 20:41

Mr C runs me ragged 24/7 and he is a very laid-back, happy kitty. Have you tried going to bed with him for a bit? That calms them down like mad. Put a hand on his back and try to drop off.

Get his thyroid tested - cats 'become more vocal' if it's overactive. You can say that again.

LanaorAna1 · 18/02/2017 20:43

Oh, and always answer when he talks. Ignoring is rude and stresses them out more.

hollinhurst84 · 18/02/2017 21:22

Bed doesn't always work - if he's in that mood he will just run over my head or go and howl in the living room Hmm
He seems better so far on these meds, am typing this with arm under his head, other arm around his bum and my chin on his back!

That sounds most satisfactory. Am tying this with Mr C's tail over the screen so sorry for any typos :)
