Neighbour feeding our cat and giving him meds!

Our cat, Jones, has a cat flap and has always come and gone as he pleases. I noticed that he hadn't eaten his food last Thursday and then he didn't come home for a few days. I started posting on social media that he was missing and a neighbour got in touch to say that she had been caring for a cat since September who had been ill and injured and could it be Jones. I assumed not since our cat had been fine, been to the vet in Sept and to the cattery in October and had no problems, but I went round just to rule it out. It was Jones!

The lady had been feeding him 6-7 sachets of wet cat food a day (which explains the vomiting at home). Jones isn't allowed wet cat food because of his gingivitis and eats a special dental care cat food. So, I knew why he was going to the lady's house. She went on to say that he had been very ill in October and she had given him antibiotics from her vet and had been giving him worming meds as well. I give him Advocate every month so I'm concerned that this double dosing has been bad for him. She also said that he was badly injured and she had been caring for his wounds. Jones is a scrappy cat, almost feral, and often has scratches on his ears. We watch them and take him to the vet if they're not healing but he has certainly been fine for the last three months so I'm not sure what she's talking about.

The lady said she tried to get him into a carrier to take him to a vet but it was impossible (as I said he's very temperamental) so she hadn't been able to have him checked for a chip (he is chipped). She also said that they were on the verge of having him put down over Christmas because he was in such a bad way! He was still coming home at Christmas and he was fine. She also suggested that Jones was traumatised and had perhaps been used for cat fights by 'unsavoury people'. All completely mad but I have never felt so judged in my life.

I've got Jones at home and bought a litter box so we can keep him inside for a couple of weeks and hopefully break the habit of going to the other house. I have no doubt that he'll be back there because he loves wet cat food. The lady has said she won't give him any more wet food but will let him have dry food with her other cats, which isn't very helpful.

I wouldn't be concerned if the lady was happy to have him round but her talk of putting down a healthy cat worries me. Undoubtedly Jones is a rangy, grumpy, slightly scraggy animal but he's been that way since he was a kitten. He's now 8 years old.

Not sure what else I can do. Any advice?

If she already has a microchip cat flap why on earth is the stupid woman asking for a contribution? It's her own fault for feeding your cat. I would go round, get Jones back and tell her where to shove her cat flap. Actually, I'd probably send DH as he's more reasonable than me! Good luck, I hope you sort this out

Tex111 · 18/01/2017 09:59

I don't understand the contribution for the cat flap either.

I emailed her asking what she had given Jones so that I can add the details to his record with our vet and explained that I had spoken to her vet who had denied prescribing anything. Her response:

"He gave them to me under the name of my cat because it is indeed not allowed. I'd been to see him and tried to take the cat. He would clearly not tell you this it's against the law. I imagine he was quite upset."

Called her vet again an am waiting for him to ring me back. What a nightmare.

The thing is you can't reason with crazy.

When my neighbours tried to steal my cat, things got very intense. I tried to be civil and kind but had to be quite rude in the end. I kept him in for a few months which he hated and he started peeing in the clean washing basket, on the beds, especially on my clothes. Luckily my neighbours got their own cat, so wont let home in now. I suspect they still feed him even though he is on a special diet, but they won't speak to me now, so I can't do anything about it.

I suggest you try again with keeping him in, just to break the habit for for him and the crazy lady. You might not get anywhere with the discussions.

Blastandtroph · 18/01/2017 10:15

Maybe she has Munchausen by proxy with your cat?!

xStefx · 18/01/2017 10:21

Strange woman

Tex111 · 18/01/2017 10:31

Blastandtroph, I said the very same thing last night! Madness.

Spoke directly to her vet and he says they never prescribed any antibiotics to her for any cats. One of her cats had an injection in August but that's it. I did warn him that she was saying he broke the law because I think he should be aware. One of them is lying. What a palaver.

trollspoopglitter · 18/01/2017 10:37

Ask her for her vets name - she's lying and used a repeat prescription for one of her cats. Vets will not prescribe without seeing the animal in person - you need to tell her vet what she's doing and alert all local vet practices.

If she won't give it to you, you can find out which vet she is registered at by her postcode / address by ringing up the vet. We always forget which surname our pets are registered under. I'm sure the receptionist will be very happy to assist as the vet practice will be liable once they've been told (but if they refused to assist.)

Alert all local vets, provide them with your chip number. Because those details can be changed dor £20 if you write into the company.

Tell her the severity of her actions. Ask her vet to give her a bollocking too.

Do that while keeping the cat inside for 1-2 months.

That should

Stormwhale · 18/01/2017 11:38

I think she is lying about the antibiotics to make it sound like she takes better care of your cat than she is. I would be clearly stating to the vets how bad she is making them look in the hope they would give her a telling off. Crazy woman.

Oldraver · 18/01/2017 20:31

I think you need to lay down the law to her and be a bit firm in your language.. I know it's really hard to stop these nutty people..I had trouble years ago with some people at the back. My cat missed anti-biotics and vets appointments as they kept my cat in. No amount of telling them that they were actually harming the cat sank in

Tex111 · 19/01/2017 19:31

Took Jones to our vet today for chat and check up. As I thought, he is perfectly healthy. None of the conditions this lady was convinced that he had. She has said that she'll stop feeding him and he has been coming home so hopefully this will be the end of it. I did look her up on FB and she's recently separated. Perhaps that has somehow fed into this weird fixation and made up problems with Jones. I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt.

This is bizarre! I hope Jones stays home now. What a strange situation with the vet and the antibiotics.

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/01/2017 19:56

I missed the bit about organised cat fighting. No vets going to risk been reported to their governing body by prescribing meds over the phone to a cat they'd never seen.

Wolfiefan · 19/01/2017 21:20

Can you cat proof your garden to stop him going back to bonkers woman?

NC1nightstand · 19/01/2017 21:35

Absolute madness. Hopefully that's an end to it and I think it's very generous of you to give her the benefit of the doubt. But, I would be inclined to write everything down in chronological order with her vet's details and be prepared to take it all to the police if it starts up again.
Just to say Jones sounds gorgeous to me, there's nothing I like more than a rangey grumpy Tom!

Tex111 · 29/05/2017 18:02

The saga continues.... Jones stayed home for a while but then started going back to the neighbour's house. I told her to use a water mister and not make him welcome. DH just went over to get him and the woman has been buying food just for Jones. She says now that it's warm she's opening her kitchen door and he comes in. Fine, but don't feed him! Chase him out.

She emailed to say that Jones has an abscess on his ear and needs to go to the vet. We've checked him over and it is a bite that has drawn blood but after cleaning and applying antiseptic it seems fine. I can't handle her overreaction. I wish she would just leave Jones alone and stop bloody feeding him.

I don't know what to do. DH was stroppy with her and told her to stop feeding Jones but she is basically ignoring what we say.

She is moving in July and I can only hope the new people will not do the same. I don't know what I can do except wait for her to leave.

I'd have lost my shit with her by now, well done for keeping so calm. I'd be concerned about her taking Jones with her when she moves house though!!

I thought my neighbour was bad with my cat, but this is something else.Shock

Justmadeperfectflapjacks · 29/05/2017 18:14

I would report her to the police. She is effectively trying to steal your pet and claim ownership. . And she is risking his health so rspca. . Send her copies of the vets bill and ask her for 50% or leave him the hell alone. .

MrsJamin · 29/05/2017 18:14

Someone is feeding our cat, making me so angry, what gives someone the right to feed someone else's cat!? I'd be so angry to find out who it is.

Stabbitha · 29/05/2017 18:28

Keep Jones in the week she moves, she might try to take him with her.

Nothing to add, except that I think Jones is possibly the best cat name I've come across!

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/05/2017 19:37

I'd put him in a cattery for July & tell her he had to be pts.

She's batshit.
