Cuddly cats

Do you have a cuddly cat? Is it a specific breed?

DH and I have today had the amazing news that the bank will lend us enough to be able to afford our very own home. After being banned from all fluffy pets in our rental house obviously my mind has completely jumped the gun and started planning for a kitty member of the family (or maybe 2!)

Obviously we will be being sensible about this and doing research about specific breeds vs rescue moggies. We've waited this long so will be settled into our new house (eek!) before bringing any kitties home.

Cat needs to be happy with kids and ideally with lots of cuddles. I LOVE the look of Maine coons but need to research properly. Any other suggestions? Is there a specific look that a rescue cat would give me to indicate it's the cuddly sort?

Our black and white moggie loves a lap for a snooze and snuggle. She was 6 when we adopted her (14 now) and first night with us I was sitting on the sofa she hopped up gradually one paw was one me, then chin, the other paw gradually followed by rest of cat purring contentedly.

My Persians are affectionate but not very cuddly. They will snuggle up at night and one of them will sit partially on my knee but never fully on it. They will tolerate being cuddled for a few minutes but don't like it much.

Got them from St Francis Persian rescues they also have other breeds sometimes.

Magic likes to snuggle under my arm and rest her chin on my shoulder. It's sooo cute.

My bengal rescue cat is a lap cat. Super demanding. Always shouting at us to sit down so he is able to relax on us. I never knew a cat could be so vocal and demanding.

Burmese. Velvet fur cuddle bugs

RedGrapeCornSnake · 12/01/2017 23:11

Oh my days, I have googled Bengals - they are stunning cats

goldie is yours from a specific Bengal rescue or a general rescue? (Any chance of a photo?)

RedGrape, Bengals do turn up in general rescues - I've seen several. They are very demanding & are too much for some people. My half-boy is also quite demanding but, I think, not nearly such hard work Grin

Minta85 · 12/01/2017 23:31

My Burmese boy is hugely cuddly and will jump up for a snuggle pretty much whenever I sit down. He is also hugely demanding of attention though, and will let us know with loud meows if he thinks we're not being attentive enough!

I have a friend with a bengal (very expensive from a breeder). She is beautiful but not cuddly at all. She is very active and constantly miaows (in a very loud piercing way!) and whilst she tolerates being touched she doesn't seem to enjoy it and never sits on knees. She loves playing though and goes out on a lead. I don't think bengals are known for being quiet lap cats if that's what you want.

Chickydoo · 13/01/2017 18:21

I have 5 Bengals
They love attention!
3 are lap cats, 2 are not.
They are very highly strung, & quite princess like. They will let you know if they are not happy.
However they all love being stroked & tickled
& They all come when they are called.
They are full of energy & play a lot.
Fabulous creatures!!!
If you have any Bengal questions do ask.

I have got two rescue moggies from Cats Protection. One is super lap cuddler, the other one loves being stroked, meows and follows you everywhere. Love both to bits!

SilenceOfThePrams · 13/01/2017 18:40

Ragdoll. Bred for floppy cuddles!

hollinhurst84 · 13/01/2017 18:42

Mine is insanely affectionate
Possibly part Siamese and he's a rescue. V v bonded

If you want kittens, I have to say Devon Rex are "bomb proof", and remain kittenish playful until 8 or 9, then calm down a bit. Very gentle, sweet and non-destructive too. They need a lot of interaction/play. They like a snuggle under the duvet.

They look a bit... unusual though, and when they come to you as a 13 week old kitten, will be mostly bald, having gone through their kitten moult. Then their lovely curly fur grows in. I've attached photographs of mine, one as a partially bald kitten, and now a curly adult.

If you go the rescue route, a young male who's used to children could be the way to go. Also attached a photo of my beautiful sleek black and white lump.

Turn the heating down. Instant lap cat.

My lap isn't required May-September.

I agree about getting an adult rescue cat from a place that uses foster carers rather than a cattery set-up.
We've had two cats this way, both soppy short haired moggies. It's lovely that the fosterer can tell you about their personality. I don't think any breed guarantees you'll get a lap cat.
How exciting for you! Have fun choosing!

MsHooliesCardigan · 17/01/2017 17:56

I have a moggie and what I think is a British Short hair cross (he adopted us and his owners let us keep him when they moved) and they're both huge lap cats. This is DS1 insisting that he can't possibly do his homework right now and he does have a point.
