After twenty years of wanting a cat I'm getting a kitten on Saturday! I've already done lots of research and begun kitten proofing my house, but what are your top tips for a first time cat owner?

Greet the cat with a head but. My cat is 13 and still greets me this way

You might be ok with a cat at 14 weeks, but just because those bites and scratches from a kitten don't really hurt much, don't let her get away with it. Be firm with things like that from day one, her mum would give her a little whack over the head so do that too (obviously very lightly, enough to surprise her). Also, don't shy away from loud noises. She needs to find a way to fit into the usual way the house works. If you reduce it now then she'll never get used to it, encourage visitors and hoovering. Oh and my biggest tip! Pet remedy! Spray it everywhere! I've known people considering on revoking their cats because they're not setting in and pet remedy has saved the day several times.

Pet remedy is brilliant. Much more effective than feliway. Although it is a bit smelly.

Get a laser toy, and entertain them whilst sitting down.

Cat trees are worth the money if you value your furniture and curtains and especially if you have children so that kitty can escape and dive bomb observe from on high.

My top cat tip If she is going to go outdoors, is to teach her to come for a whistle. Not many people seem to do this but it is v useful.

Whistle when you are feeding her and once she associates it with food then you can use it to get her in at night. Also useful if you want to check where your cat is so you don't accidentally lock them in rooms.

take up your carpets

If you let them do something once, you'll never be able to change your mind and stop them in future!

Interactive playtime is vital.

You are a mere servant to your furry overlord. Never forget your place.

treat them with same respect as family,i have found talking to them in a happy tone of voice helps the bonding process.

Cats prefer a bed they can hide in

Never trust the cat completely. Sneaky buggers. Wink

Da Bird Interactive Feather a Toy (Amazon has them) is the best thing to distract them/tire them out which is good for your furnishings.
Fleece cat bed which hangs off radiator is fantastic (less than a tenner/machine washable), sometimes I put the heating on for an hour and my 2 fall asleep in it for the rest of the day & I can get some work done.,

You are going to have so much fun.
