Are there breeds suitable for indoor only?

Or is this a myth?

We have had three cats so far in 12 years here near a busy road. Two have been killed on the road and the third we re homed to my parents when we realised he wasn't the scaredy cat we believed and was heading over the road to the local park/wooded area.
I would really still love our home to have a cat... maybe a dog at a push... but couldn't bear to lose another Moggy to that bloody road. Are there any cats truly happy to remain indoors or is it quite cruel really to keep them indoors?
Thank you.

I have British Shorthairs, they are definitely not indoor cats. I think some people equate paying a lot of money for a cat means you should keep them indoors, in case they get run over/stolen. But we all love our cats , no matter what the cost, we'd be as equally devastated if anything happened to them.
I am sure the ragdoll owners on here are better able to speak about the bread than me, but I have several friends with rag dolls who go out, but both live in small, quiet cul de sacs.

Both my rescue cats have ended being indoor cats of their own volition.
Maybe ring around local rescues as they may have cats that are already indoor cats.
I think it's more to do with an individual cats personality rather than breed.

When I asked about insurance I was offered cover at a fairly standard price, but anything directly related to his FIV would not be covered. As a young fit (otherwise) healthy cat who has limited supervised access to outside I think that would be good enough.

321 I can assure you that my BSH is very much indoor. All of our other cats have used the flap or just walked out of the door. She will not go out at all, nothing to do with how much she cost. She makes the rules.

I think it's very much down to the cats preference, some cats just like being inside. Honestly I'd prefer it if she went out, even if just on the patio to mooch about but she can't be persuaded.

When The Lodger moved in with us, there was little point in having him as an indoor cat. I insisted on relinquishment of Pom Poms etc and also on a fair old curfew - which he's accepted, gracefully - but as for the rest? Well - he's just a force of nature, really.

Ovienna. I got my girls from St Francis Persian rescue they are great. I still have a lot of contact with them as I transport kitties for them. They have a Tiffany cat looking for a home who's been there a while. I met her briefly and she's lovely.

I have an exotic shorthair - she will only go out if the dog or I are out, and she comes straight back in when we do. I wanted a breed that wasn't outdoorsy as we have a prolific cat poisoner where I live. TBH I'm not sure she knows she is a cat - she is such a little fusspot!

Ragdolls. Out of our two one of them shows interest in going out, darts past you occasionally when you come home then stands frozen in fear on the path until you scoop him up. The other one would not leave the house if it was on fire.

Second that they wouldn't last two minutes in the great outdoors. Dozy fluffballs that they are.

I have a Birman and he is perfectly happy indoors. I have lived in loads of houses where he has had access to outdoors but he has never seen the point.

As others have said lots of rescue have indoor only cats so it would be worth checking with them too.

I have a Maine Coon that lives indoors and goes out in the garden on a lead for a bit of a walk and mooch about. Although she has refused to leave the back door for a couple of weeks, it's too cold out apparently. Hmm She was an indoor/outdoor cat in her previous home and we were expecting to have to let her out when we got her but she showed so little interest in going out that we decided to keep her indoors. We live in an area where there have been cat killings and she's very trusting of people so I must admit I'm quite glad she's a happily indoor cat. She doesn't make bolts for the doors when they are open whilst we bring shopping in or anything and has never meowed or scratched at the door to go out. Like others I think it comes down to the individual cat as much as the breed. I know plenty of happily indoor cats including moggies, a Turkish Angora, ragdolls, Persians and BSH.
