Cat gone off all high quality wet food - help!

We got a 2 year old rescue cat about 6 months ago. She was originally fed on Felix but when I did a bit of research I wasn't happy giving her such low quality food. So I bought a few different things from Zooplus - Bovita, which she loved at first but now will only lick off the jelly/sauce, Animonda Carny, which again she loved at first but now won't eat, and Smilla, which she will sometimes eat small portion of but not much at all.

I buy good quality grain free dry food from our local pet shop but I am worried about her kidneys/general health with not eating much wet food.

The only food she goes nuts for is the tuna/fish ones from Smilla but I've read that its not good to give them too much fish so I stopped buying those.

I would really appreciate any advice - thanks!

Ours eats Canageen dry food which is a high quality high meat content product with no grain etc. But for wet food will only touch Whiskas poultry pouches in jelly. He thrives on this and I figure it's a fair balance. He has two pouches a day and a big bowl of dry and I don't think we'll change it.

Thanks for all the advice. Kind of reassuring to know my cat isn't the only fussy one! I will try some trial packs of different brands, think I will start with Nature's Menu and Thrive.

I have been put off buying the more expensive ones but then again I just throw all the current stuff away so it might be better value for money to buy something more expensive if she will eat it!

When BorpCat1 declines her wet food, a couple of crushed dreamies sprinkled on the top changes her mind.

miggleswiff · 06/01/2017 10:53

Right, I have ordered some pouches of Feringa and James Wellbeloved, and some tins of granatapet, from Zooplus. They don't do Thrive so I haven't tried that yet (I signed up for a year's loyalty discount from Zooplus so want to continue to buy through them).

Will report back!

She's currently curled up on my lap keeping me warm so I forgive her for her annoying fussiness!

Fingers crossed your zooplus order will be well received OP - my fusspot wolfed down a Feringa pouch this morning, having spurned last night's Smilla the same flavour that he had eaten happily the day before.

Weedsnseeds1 · 06/01/2017 11:53

I tried cat soup as a treat, it was deemed unacceptable. Dreamies are politely accepted as a snack, but may be picked up and discretely dropped out of sight, they can only be eaten in isolation, applying them to food renders both food and Dreamies highly toxic, in his mind. He will eat a bit of roast chicken if he's in the mood. Luckily he drinks plenty of water ( scummy garden water is the best) so hopefully he'll be fine, unless his dried food is discontinued, in which case he'll probably starve himself to death!

Reminds me of this from the 'How it works - The Cat' book dd2 got me for Xmas.

Prof I got that for Christmas too! Very funny!

LivingInMidnight · 06/01/2017 12:36

Ahh I forgot kitten thrive is harder to find.

Badcat666 · 06/01/2017 13:00

I had this with one of mine, vet suggested I tried pinging it in the microwave to warm it up a bit and she again to shovel it in again. Cats go by smell a lot of the time and warming it up helps it smell more foody.

Also helps when your cat is feeling a bit poorly or has the snuffles, as does making your own "meat soup" by boiling chicken/ fish/ meats in water... I do this as a treat for mine every couple of weeks as they are getting on these days.

The smell link also makes sense as I now feed mine Harringtons dried food instead of the other low protein ones and they definitely smell more meaty/ fishy which my 2 lurve!

CatSittingMonkey · 06/01/2017 13:48

Also something worth trying is Greenwoods food, also available on Zooplus.

My two love the wet (tuna/chicken) and the dry (turkey) having turned their nose up at Feringa/Applaws/Orijen, to name a few, over the years.

TheWayYouLookTonight · 06/01/2017 15:54

Prof and Living me too - MIL got it for me for xmas and its hilarious!

TheCakes · 06/01/2017 17:43

Ozzy has the odd cat soup. He loves it. I give it him more for the liquid really.

hollinhurst84 · 06/01/2017 23:47

Mine wouldn't eat cat soup this week. Until I slammed it onto a saucer and then it was rated as delicious ConfusedConfusedConfused
He will eat Lily's kitchen. This week. I'm not sure about next week Grin

kelj2 · 06/01/2017 23:52

Our cat will only eat raw chicken or fish. We pretty much just feed him chicken wings or little chicken nibbles you get from the deli. Our vet said it's really good for their teeth. Our little furball won't even touch tinned or packaged wet cat food. He's the fussiest little thing.

EachandEveryone · 07/01/2017 00:01

Mines the same we've had every posh brand but it's costing me a fortune. I'm on Butchers now I'm not sure how the quality is but it's grain free and she seems to like it. Much cheaper than Thrive but only comes in large tins. For dry she's liking Lily's. it took me ages to get her onto dry food and I'm partly regretting the fact that she now favours it as it's not supposed to be their main meal is it?

RubbishMantra · 07/01/2017 00:23

My boys prefer dry, but I fret about crystals blocking their pee-pipes.

So Little M has Gourmet cat soup, and MCat has Gourmet Perle sachets. With added warm boiled water. I'm sure their food bill is larger than mine....

Butchers Classic is a really good food, @EachandandEveryone . I just wish mine would eat it.

RubbishMantra · 07/01/2017 00:53

*...the sachets in addition to their Applaws or Orijen biscuits, to police their water intake.

Sparrowlegs248 · 07/01/2017 00:56

My CPL cat was on Felix, I changed him to better stuff, he vomited. Tried all sorts, vomited. So he's back in Felix, only has half sachet a day.

Other cat I hand reared, won't touch wet food at all.

WilliamHerschel · 11/01/2017 18:01

Thanks AnotherEmma, I had no idea!

orangeyellowgreen · 12/01/2017 18:16

Most cars are fussy and we end up feeding what they will eat, rather than what we want them to eat.
I use fresh meat and fish, sometimes cooked but mostly raw. If you do this you're meant to give some commercial food too or the diet lacks some nutrients.

miggleswiff · 23/01/2017 15:50

So, as promised I am here to update on what Miss FussPuss will deign to eat.

She wouldn't touch the GranataPet, would only lick the sauce off the Jame Wellbeloved, but she seems to tolerate the Feringa Duo pouches OK. So will be getting more of those.

I'll also look into the cat soup to try to get more fluid in her. And is cat milk any good? I always thought any type of milk, even cat milk, wasn't good but the rescue lady said it was OK to give. Is that right?

OP posts:
Weedsnseeds1 · 23/01/2017 16:38

Cat milk is fine, or lactose free normal milk. In moderation. It's a source of water, at least. I have discovered that mine likes black olives ( but not gammon, or suckling pig)!

dementedpixie · 23/01/2017 16:48

Mainstream cat foods do not only have 4% meat in them although they may only have 4% of the main flavour e.g. The whiskas that mine have been having has meat and animal derivatives as the first ingredient and then fish derivatives including 4% tuna as the second ingredient.

I am going to move them gradually to a different food and have chosen wainwrights wet food as an alternative to whiskas. One only eats wet and the other eats wet and dry
