Let cat die at home or take to vet?

I am not really a cat person and need advice. Our wee tabby appeared at our back door 7 years ago and has stayed ever since. We think she was about 3 so maybe 9 or 10 now. She has stopped eating for 2 days and has just curled up on the sofa and can hardly lift her head. She has started to smell very bad. We think she is dying of natural causes. Should we take her to the vet to perhaps get put down or should we let her literally curl up and die in peace?

Thanks for advice. I know it's all available online but yesterday I was looking for a quick response and as soon as veterinari responded I did what I was told.

OP I want to apologise. Your post upset me somewhat and I should have left the thread without posting rather than be so harsh. You did the right thing in the circumstances.

I'm sorry there's a cat shaped space in your world. You did the right thing but it is hard and it hurts I know. I remember the first time I had to have cat put to sleep. She was nearly 10, developed FIP which is horrible and fatal and I didn't even have a vet as I'd moved country and my cats were strictly indoor. I was a mess and it happened really fast. Practically overnight.

Take care of yourselves and be glad she's no longer in pain. Be kind to yourselves. It hurts more than you ever imagine it will when you lose one.

I think there is a vaccine for cat aids.

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/12/2016 01:57

I only say this as we lived 20 years ago in an area where Cat Aids was rife. We had our cats vaccinated.

Veterinari · 17/12/2016 05:28

RTFT OliversMummy there is no FIV vacc in the UK
