Why is my cat calling

I have a cat who is about 14, never been ill etc. Small cat. Doesn't look old at all.

We lost another one of our cats in early September (she had a mass on her lungs, had her PTS so not to go through pain). In the last 2/3 weeks the cat has occasionally walked around the house calling. Not meowing but a loud call. If I call her she comes to me and stops. This is new and I don't know why.

Is she missing the other cat? Could she be ill?

I don't want to put her through the stress of going in the car to the vets if it's nothing.

How is her sight, would you judge?

RozzlePops · 08/12/2016 23:46

I did think that, but I think it's OK. I will study it some more just in case.

I'll try and find a way to test tomorrow.

She might be missing the other cat. I lost my lovely baby boy without any warning a few months ago (he was only 5) and one of my other cats (12yrs) did this the 1st couple of weeks (they were very close).

It was like she was looking for him and going "Where the fuck are you?" Every time I went to her she shut up. Not done it for a while now.

I agree it sound like he is missing the other cat except its a while ago now. perhaps getting disorientated, keep an eye on him, could be sign of ageing.
do cats get senile?

PenguinsandPebbles · 09/12/2016 00:31

She may well be missing your other cat.

My lovely girl cat was inseparable from my little boy cat who died very suddenly when he was 3 (was so sad as he had massive liver failure from a rare illness)

She was fine for a week or a two clingy but always been a bit of a snuggle puss and I was very sad and then all of a sudden she started to cry out like you describe, she wouldn't eat it was awful. Vets suggested feliaway as nothing was physical wrong, and gave her lots of kitten milk and chicken so she was eating a little but she would still cry out and lost so much weight. Lots of googling and figured she must be missing her friend and that's how the big furry lump by my feet arrived Smile

As soon as he arrived she started to get better.

But agree it may well be her sight, but I'd try feilaway in the meantime and if nothing is physically wrong you may have to get her a kitten :)

So sorry about the loss of your cat Flowers

It could be a sign of senior cognitive dysfunction - common in older animals and essentially a form of dementia. Vacant behaviour, vocalising and toileting accidents are common signs.

Selgian is the medication of choice if you did want to investigate/treat it

cozietoesie · 09/12/2016 12:38

It could indeed. Older cats sometimes go a little doolally.

The trouble with failing faculties (e.g. Eyesight) is that you can't always tell unless there are clear clinical signs or big behavioural changes. (Cats not being given to answering eg an optician's questions with any degree of clarity. Wink)

If you really don't want to vet her at the moment, I'd keep her close, stick to a good routine and keep the house layout as close to what it's always been as you can. And keep a weather eye on her - you might decide, at some point, that her behaviour warrants a vet visit.

Hi, the things I'd consider would be:

Dementia
Hearing loss
Hyperthyroidism - common in older cats and causes anxiety

RozzlePops · 09/12/2016 16:32

Thanks for your advice. I tried to test her sight by putting my hand up to her and moving it slowly, she followed it. I don't think that's it.

Maybe she is just missing our other cat. We have just 2 now.

The hyperthyroidism :

Does she eat more than usual, demand more food, and getting skinny ?

RozzlePops · 09/12/2016 17:06

She is always hungry. Not lost any weight. Has always been a small cat, but has a little belly.

Maybe I will take her in to get checked out. I need to get her wormed too.

When did she last see the vet? Smile

RozzlePops · 09/12/2016 18:58

She hasn't needed to for a very long time. We stopped her vaccinations when she was about 6. I don't think she has been since. She has always been the healthy one.

I will take her on Monday, I will call first thing.
