Feeding 9 week old kittens

I have 2 adorable 9 week old kittens.

The home they came from, from what I gathered were feeding them dog food once a day HmmAngry

I feed them when I brought them home at lunch time. They ate a pouch of kitten food each. The same at tea time, the same at bed time (I didn't give it all in one go, but they seemed to still be hungry with less.

The next morning I fed them, one wasn't interested, the other gobbled and threw up.

After a week of lots of funny poops DH got them Applaws dried food and I mixed it with boiled chicken. It didn't make any difference.
On Tuesday the vet prescribed Royal Canin sensitive pouches (4) which lasted one day. They are eating two pouches a day each, so yesterday I got some more, but only have one pouch left.

The kittens are definitely pooping less.

Will going back to non-prescription food after 2 mean a return of the poops?

Is what they're eating excessive?

Wow where did you get these kittens from, I hope whoever it was you reported them to cats protection as they shouldn't be breeding cat!Angrycats physically can't survive on anything apart from cat food, they need more protein than dogs do and all taurine which isn't found in dog food, they're probably quite malnourished and there little tummys wont be adjusted to there proper diet yet which is why you're getting funny poos! You could try changing back for to * a non prescription kitten food but because if there past diet I'd keep it a good quality like royal canin, applaws, purely or wainwrights but you need to phase new food in gradually over 7-10 days*, suddenly changing food especially with kittens (even if it is to a proper or good quality food) can cause tummy upsets. Do you have a picture of them at all out of curiosity?:)

The bit about 7-10 day's is what should be bold not the other bit

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/12/2016 19:18

Which kitten food are you feeding? I feed kittens on demand. Their growing so fast & will regulate when they've finished.

It's not often you can over feed a kitten, it's like feeding a human baby.

LynetteScavo · 08/12/2016 19:21

So should I get more Royal Canin Sensitive on prescription so I can mix it with some Applaws for the next week? The vets don't seem to want to give me much. Confused

I didn't get the cats from breeders, just a hap-hazard family with very different ideas re: children and pets to myself.

The pooping has definitely calmed down, and I want to keep it that way.

The day I got them home I gave them Iams kitten food a mix of Welty and dry...then have Applaws and booed chicken for two days, then Royal Canin sensitive prescribed by vets, for the past two days but only have one sachet left. (Vet gave me 4 Tuesday eve, and 6 yesterday evening)

It's probably all the cereals in their dog food fucking their systems up.

I'd try cooked chicken breast mixed with cereal free pouches. They look beautiful.

I hope they've spayed mum cat.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/12/2016 19:27

I bet Iams has cereal in it.

LynetteScavo · 08/12/2016 19:32

Sorry for all the typos Blush

Can you recommend a cereal free pouch?

Aww they're lovely!:)
Yes get some more pouches, just to phase them over you may be able to get them online but I know most pet stores don't sell them apart from on there website.

I'd still report them to RSPCA or cats protection as I'm assuming they still have an unneuntered female they're still feeding dog food :(

Most cat foods do have cereals unless marketed as grain free or otherwise , there's nothing wrong with cereals in pet food unless your pet is intolerant to them, that usually shows it's self as skin irritation though. Try and keep them on kitten food rather than boiled chicken as there's a lot of stuff they need for growing and development that they won't get from chicken.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/12/2016 19:40

Aldi & Felix are cereal free, Aldi doesn't do kitten though. My childhood cats just had normal food though and thrived.

You'll get really good at skim reading ingredients. Applaws is a dry food you can add water to to make it wet enough for kitten teeth to bite into it.

froglou · 08/12/2016 19:52

Whiskas, Felix and most own brand have added sugar and a very low meat(Felix is 4%) content I wouldn't recommended them.

In general dried food is better as they don't need to eat as much and it's better for there teeth, and eventually I'd phase over just to dry food after they get neutered is a good time for this as they tend to put on weight after they get neutered.

LynetteScavo · 09/12/2016 23:28

I've just caught one of them munching my very salty crisps ShockHmm

Their poops have been much les frequent but not particularly solid yet...how long should it take (had to go back to Applaws kitten food as Royal Canin Ran out and I didn't manage to get to vets. I'm a bit upset that they didn't believe how much the kittens are eating.
