We've just adopted a 1 year old female cat, we pick her up on Saturday. We've not had cats before as a family but my husband has. Can anyone help me on what I should expect? We met her today and she was friendly and interested. I was planning on bringing her home and just keeping it low key, does anyone have any tips? I'm so excited!

How lovely. The main tip is of course to make sure she doesn't get out for at least three weeks. That means no opening any windows in rooms she has access to, not even high up small ones that you think she's couldn't possible get through.

Other than that, just take it slowly. It's often an idea to start them in one room, but it really depends on how confident the cat is.

That's great, thank you for replying. We have a two up two down house so was planning on limiting her to downstairs in the day and seeing how she settles as to wear she goes at night. Is this a good idea? She's quite confident, and we have lots of little hides holes she can go in if she needs space. This is her Smile

I just wanted to say how very pretty she is.

She's a very pretty girl indeed. Smile Looks as if she might be quite a confident one.

ChristmasTreeCat · 08/12/2016 18:24

She ran straight up to my (very confident) 2 yo and sniffed him then let him stroke her Smile I'm hoping it's a good sign. I'm also hoping she'll sit with me on an evening and not become ds' cat!

Do you know any of her history? Smile She's only young so might still be fairly active.

She was found abandoned with her kitten. She's been spayed and vaccinated and that's all they know. They've had her since September and say she is sociable and active but hasn't scratched her scratching pole or trashed anything and has been using litter reliably. I don't mind active as long as she's friendly, we live in the middle of nowhere so she can go out happily and explore/hunt if she wants when she's settled. The rescue recommended keeping her in for a month then starting letting her out unfed and offering her food straight away on return, does this sound good advice?

It sounds fine. Smile I'd generally let a strange cat out a little earlier - say three weeks - but I wouldn't disagree violently with them. You'll be lucky in the weather - outside isn't so appealing in January, if you're in the U.K.

We adopted a 1 year old Cat and her 5 month old kitten about 6 weeks ago. Not sure how old your cat's kitten is but we have been advised to feed her kitten food as she needed a bit of building up after having a litter so young. She is a bit more reserved than her kitten but loves playing with ping pong balls and tin foil!

She is getting used to us, we initially kept them in a room with food and a litter tray then let them out in the house after a few days - they still have "their" room to sleep in though and run straight there if there's any noises they dislike.

It took her a little longer to settle than the younger one, but after about a week it seemed to click that this was her house and her confidence has really grown.

We were told to keep ours in until Spring as they've never been out before, but that is possibly a bit over cautious - though I suspect she will be very reluctant to leave the house as she likes being warm Smile

Good luck, I was a bit reluctant as I'd never had a cat before, but they are incredibly charming and such time wasters!

She will love living rurally, I never realised how many rabbits we had until Dh shone a torch and asbo was nose to nose with a rabbit in a field full of them.

She looks a confident one but she'll need to stay in for a few weeks. It's torture when they disappear.

I'd keep her in at night too, there's predators plus people out lamping.

OK, I'm awake and excited! Today I'm going to pick up a litter tray and maybe a bed. I have some treats and the rescue provide some food and litter. What else do I need? I have a carrier which I planned to put some old towels and baby blankets in, is that OK to bring her home?

fluffy I plan to keep her in at night and she can go out in the day. I want the company on an evening! Smile
