How many litter trays and where?

As you may be aware, we've just passed a home check for 1 year old cat with IBS.
Hopefully collecting him on Friday and we are counting down the days.

We currently have one litter tray for Toots in the kitchen.

I've told Dh we need at least two more and he's moaning that we don't need 3.

He's also moaning about having one in the bathroom (downstairs bathroom)

But that sounds right doesn't it?

One in the kitchen
One in the bathroom
One upstairs just in case

That sounds about right to me, particularly considering the IBS.

You can always aim to get rid of the bathroom one at some point, but I would start out with as many as you can fit in to be on the safe side.

Good luck with him!

We have four cats and two trays.

However only two of the cats use the trays and the other two use the garden. I think three, considering the cats health issues, is a good idea.

Cats can be funny about sharing trays. Ours are fine and don't seem to mind all using them if we are out all day and they can't get into the garden. But if they started crapping or weeing on the floor then I'd be getting more trays.

It's easier to clean a tray than get cat poo or wee out of a carpet.

Sounds about right to me too. I'd have one covered, one uncovered and different litter in each until you work out what he prefers.
Having said all that, pyjamacat won't use a litter tray. Ever. He needs to go outside. Hmm
Enjoy your new family member 😺
