What cat bowls do you use?

I'm not sure which ones are best. Ceramic, plastic, stainless steel, glass? Which do you use? What are the most hygienic?

Thanks! :)

I tried lots of types over the years. Plastic I hate. Ceramic are good but heavy and so a pain to wash. The best ones so far are metal camping plates and bowls (on sale in sainsburys). Easy to clean, with no sharp corners, and look good too.

Tis all very personal though.

We use melamine bowls similar to these. Think we got them from a supermarket. We have had them for years - they are easy to clean and pretty much indestructible.

We also have a ceramic dish someone gave us - it has developed fine cracks and is about to get thrown out. And we have one metal dish that we use for water - can't fault it for practicality but it does look a bit boring.

Plastic - they don't seem to like, and can cause acne.

I use glass or china/ceramic. Which an excellent poster has pointed out can be found amongst your mis-matched crockery, or for pence in charity shops. They like a wide plate or bowl to eat from. Can be messy, but just pop a wipeable plastic feeding mat underneath.

My dd works in a cats home, and she told me they use those little tiny plastic bowls with charactors on for the babies and bigger ones for the adult cats.

LowDudgeon · 02/12/2016 23:51

I have 2 metal bowls in a stand where their water & biscuits live (water from metal seems a bit to me but they drink it)

Wet food goes in nice heavy pot bowls. 3 cats, 3 bowls, I have 10 altogether so they get rotated daily, soaked every morning & washed in dishwasher.

Plastic & melamine both seem much too light

Blush the yellow ones out of the pack of kids plastic ikea bowls. The other colours are for the kids

RubbishMantra · 02/12/2016 23:53

*... forgot to say a wide water bowl too. I just got mine this one, which they deem most acceptable. It's refreshed at least twice a day, as I have The Fear of them getting cystitis. They have 3 dotted about the house.

cozietoesie · 02/12/2016 23:59

China 'fruit bowls' (aka 'oatmeal bowls') - mainly from charity shops or the cupboards of friends and relatives. Dirt cheap (or free) and wash easily. There are only two or three of each pattern but the cats don't seem to care. Wink

RubbishMantra · 03/12/2016 00:30

Maybe they do care cozie. And they'd like their meals to be served on a large square slate. After the amuse bouche, served with a selection of mini loaves of course. Grin

cozietoesie · 03/12/2016 00:32

I stand corrected. Grin

therealpippi · 03/12/2016 00:52

Oh yes they care! Wink

Araminta99 · 03/12/2016 01:11

therealpippi Thanks! Out of curiosity, why do you hate plastic?

sodabreadjam thanks for the link, those are so cute and colourful! Does melamine last longer than plastic?

RubbishMantra love that bowl! And glad to hear your cats have given it the paw of approval :D

Steel embedded in a blue plastic fish.

SharingMichelle · 03/12/2016 02:42

Plastic because they have to be up high (or the dog eats the cat food) and Bastard Cat likes to swipe it off the side.

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/12/2016 08:25

Cheap side plates from the supermarket. They fit in the dw easily.

therealpippi · 03/12/2016 08:46

Oh I don't hate it (wrong choice of words). I have used it often (ikea bowls etc) but the cats seems to dislike it snd also they seem more a pain to wash. And they are ugly Grin

FrickOnAStick · 03/12/2016 09:00

I use plastic dog bowls.

He hates stainless steel because he clanks his teeth on it.

He doesn't like cat ones because they are too small and squash his whiskers (every cat I've ever had has been like that).

I don't like plates because he needs a rim yo keep the food in, otherwise he chases it off the edge of the plate and onto the floor. Messy bugger.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 03/12/2016 09:05

Large stainless steel dog bowls. They like to eat or drink together so need a big bowl to fit both their heads.
