I think my kittens have fleas! They've just turned 6 months and have never been out the house except to the vet. Started noticing red spots in the bathroom a few weeks ago so I googled it today and it turned up fleas. Checked their fur and found 'flea poo' immediately treated them both then stripped and changed all our beds, washed all the blankets etc that they sleep on and hoovered the house from top to bottom! They were in getting spayed last Monday, would the vet not have noticed when he was shaving their fur?? I have no idea where they could have possibly picked them up from? Anyway I was just wondering if there is anything else I could do? X

Hi there Smile

Timing is everything but I'm a little surprised that the vet didn't see anything unless they were having a real busy day perhaps. What colour are they?

What have you treated them with? And did you use anything in the house?

Hi, thanks for replying. I used frontline spot on treatment but have nothing for the house at the moment as I live in the country and don't drive but I'm going to town tomorrow so I could get then? I didn't actually find any fleas on them just the dirt that turned red when wet? Also found a tiny black thing on the scratching tower? I've alway had cats and dogs growing up and as an adult and have never encountered fleas before! I'm not entirely convinced as the vet never seen especially as he done two of them!

Don't worry. Fleas can come from anywhere at any time so the best thing to do is use prevention on the cats and house so that anything that does arrive will find an inhospitable environment and die off. (At one stage or another.) Then you can relax about it.

I'm afraid that Frontline is no longer much effective in some areas. (The fleas gain immunity.) yYou'll probably need to give your vet a buzz - don't buy over the counter stuff when it comes to flea treatments on the cats themselves - about the best one and the timing. (If they've just had Frontline, you likely won't want to give them something else too quickly because of chemical overload.) Probably Advocate or Bravecto are your best bets.

Although you may be lucky. This time. Frontline may be fine with you. Smile

Oh - and have they been wormed?

As for the house, I'd use something like Indorex for soft furnishings/rugs etc that can't be washed properly. (You can buy that in canisters of spray online.) Hoover like a Stepford Wife around the rest, paying especial attention to cracks, gaps in skirting boards, less trodden areas and son on. (That has the advantage of also picking up - maybe - stray moth eggs if you have.a potential problem there.)

and so on. Blush

Thank you cozie. The frontline I got was from the vet so I guess it's ok here? I have hoovered everything/everywhere and will do so again today. I'll take a look online for the stuff for soft furnishings. Yes they have been wormed several times and also had a flea repellent (not in the last four weeks though) thought I would be ok till they go outside but guess not?

I've had an indoor cat who acquired a flea from somewhere, I'm afraid. Their risk is lower if they don't go outside but it's not zero. (You might carry something inside on a shoe from the garden, or you might have a visitor who drops something inside the house. Etc etc etc.) Sorry.

Thanks again. Just done the whole house again so hope I've got them all! Any idea how long the treatment takes to work as they are currently on a blanket on my daughters bed?
