Cat won't eat, drooling and sticking tongue out...

A local cat has adopted me. He has another home but never seems to want to be there so has adopted me and I do feed him and he sleeps here most nights. The last few days he's been refusing cat food and is drooling a bit and sticking his tongue out. He ate some dreamies today but runs away from his catfiod and just wants to curl up and sleep all the time and not go out. I don't know what to do as he's not my cat and I don't have much money right now to pay for a vet as I recently left my job so not eligible for benefits so don't think I can go to the PDSA!

What should I do..?

It doesn't sound good . Call a vet and explain the situation. Or call RSPCA / Cats Protection League.

It sounds like something is wrong with his jaw or his teeth. I second what Weeds said. Some vets might do a payment plan.

Sounds like his teeth are bad, (running away from his food, drooling). That will mean he's in a huge amount of pain, because cats are experts at hiding it.

Do you know where his owner lives? I would go to them and explain the situation. If you don't know where his owners live, put a paper collar on him, asking the owners to contact you.

Well the bottom line here is that the cat could be dying. Start by calling the vet and explaining. It could be poisoned from something it has ingested like lilies? Our cat did this and nearly died. She had to go on a drip at the vets for 24 hrs. Do you know where the cat is from? Although if you feed it then you are responsible. If you feed another person's cat then you have essentially stolen their cat. The least you can do is pay for the vet when it gets ill.

Do you know the people at his 'other' home? Need to talk to them anyway.
Right now, whether you stole him or not hardly matters. He needs looking at by a vet.

I agree that you need to take him to a vet right away. It could be very serious and there might not be time to waste chasing his owners. You have taken their cat, if it sleeps in your house most nights then it lives with you not them and with that comes the responsibility for vet bills etc. You say it isn't your cat but if it sleeps and eats at your house it certainly doesn't sound like it's "theirs" any more. The vet may be able to arrange a payment plan. The only other option would be to approach the owners to see if they have insurance. If they do then he may be covered for treatment but legally I'm pretty sure that the onus is on you as the person who he spends most time with and has noticed his condition to seek treatment for him.

Stealing a cat is bad enough even if you can afford the vet bills.

You stole the cat, now you look after it and take it to the bloody vet.

Please take him to the Vet OP. I wouldn't even wait 15 mins if mine went funny like that.

Any chance of an update? I don't normally like to pester for an update but I really hate to think of a cat in pain. I hope your cat has been to a vet and is now on the mend. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Hi thanks for all your comments. I did take cat to vet, was given antibiotics and cat is eating more now, dreamies and soft food so hopefully is on the mend now. 😀
