I picked up 10 wk old kitten yesterday. Pet shop owner told me she had been flea treated (and wormed) and should be ok for 3 weeks, however if I see black specs when combing to give her flea tab and treat the house. Saw her scratching behind ears earlier, combed her and lots of black specs fell out. I have the flea tabs, but she wont take it out of my hand. Can I put it in her food bowl? She is on dried food. Also, I have some spray for the house (bought it just in case) should I treat the kitten then do the spray immediately or wait until the tablets have worked?

I have to step in a refute that vets are not taught about nutrition and what is taught is taught be the pet food companies.
Entire module of the my first year was nutrition taught by the universities nutrition lecturer who was and is independent of any pet food company.
The first contact as a vet student I had with a pet food company was in my final year, my nutrition teaching was long finished by then.
Vets do not get 'kick backs' from pet food companies, yes they make profit on the food they sell in exactly the same way the pet food shop does, but at lower levels than they do,

Thanks to everyone for all your advice. Kitten went to vet yesterday, she does have fleas, so he did an advocate spot on treatment for her and we now have enough for the next 3 doses, along with worming stuff and regime.

I sprayed the room she was in last monday with the 4Fleas spray, but bought some Indorex yesterday, and now that she's treated plan to do the rest of the house (do I need to do the living room again?).

As for food, vet says she is fine on a dry diet and he was pleased with the food she was on (Hills Science), she does not need wet food, but if we want to give something occassionally then chicken, tuna or prawns (cooked) best.

We asked about the legalities of buying from a pet shop. He said it is not illegal, but not encouraged as you cant be sure the animals have been treated fairly or kept in good conditions. So, I cant report the pet shop.

But lesson learned the hard way, and if I could turn back the clock, I would have pursued getting a kitten or cat from a pet rescue place, for peace of mind.

However, the kitten we have has a really lovely nature, and I am sure she's going to make a really nice family pet.

Just a last bit of advice from those of you that have used Indorex, on the tin it is very vague and just says remove pets, spray and ventilate room. Do I need to vaccum before and after also?

Thanks everyone again.

I personally wouldn't vacuum before as you'll just have a vacuum cleaner full of fleas to spread to other parts of the house. Spray and leave a couple of days before vacuuming. Good luck with the kitten.

You need to spray indorex in the vacuum.
