When do cats reach full size?

According to googling it, its 9-18 months, however ...

I've never adopted young cats before, but we went looking for one new cat aged 5+ and somehow got two of about 18 months. They're now coming up to 3 and one has filled out to a pleasant plumpness, while the other (who used to feel too delicate to me - they're both boys and picking up the fluffy guy just felt like nothing, felt like he weighed 8 pounds, versus the 18 pound bruisers I'm used to).

Well, this winter the fluffmeister has suddenly started seeming much more muscular and solid feeling.

Do they still grow at this age? If not in terms of their skeletal structure, then in muscle mass?

Just so. DSH = moggie in vet terminology it seems.

It just sounds posher. Wink

Oh Yes. When those girls party, they PARTY! Grin

FuzzyWizard · 13/11/2016 21:40

I know that a DSH is a moggy. What I meant was that moggies are more likely to have genes from big breeds like Maine Coons and NFCs and Ragdolls now as there are a lot more of them about than a couple of decades ago. All it takes is a few unneutered ones sowing their wild oats and you can end up with lots of enourmous moggies out there interbreeding.

It's very difficult to guesstimate cat age once past the kitten stage, so if age wasn't known for certain they could be younger than you thought. A friend has Maine Coons and said they don't stop growing until around 5 years. Mine was guessed at age 2 in February and was 5Kg, now 7Kg of solid muscle. He also had a few white hairs that are now distinct white markings. His breed mix is unknown and he's "fluffy", not long or short hair, somewhere in between. He (from what I have heard) exhibits Siamese character traits, but looks nothing like one. Previous cat was always tiny, 2Kg max but lived until 20 and cats before that were average about 3.5Kg. Only had tiny cat from a kitten but the others were young and stayed around the same size. Current cat has boxing gloves for paws so not sure if that's an indicator of final size!

Hmmmm.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/11/2016 21:52

I cNt believe that my parents tall gangly and slender boy weighs the same as my two chunky stubby legged furballs. I still think the vets scales are wrong, especially when the vet said he'd gained 500g. Don't know where he's put it!

cozietoesie · 13/11/2016 21:56

Sometimes, Toddler, whether they've recently used their tray or not can make a bit of a difference. Wink It may not be a full 500g.

thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts · 13/11/2016 21:57

My moggie is two aNd weighs 8kg. He is heavier than the Maine Coons with a chunky build that is probably due to his mum being part Bengal. I hope he doesn't get much bigger.

Weedsnseeds1 · 13/11/2016 22:13

toddler , mine is short legged, but big cobby body and very long. I think the gangly ones tend to be muscley and that weighs heavy!

Toddlerteaplease · 13/11/2016 22:16

Cozie, yes he must have had a huge poo the first time he was weighed. There is no way he could have put 500g without him looking slightly portly, which he isn't. I thought my girls were mainly fur until a groomer commented they were fat. I was quite offended!!

cozietoesie · 13/11/2016 22:21

Well - I did say 'the full 500'. It would be pretty easy to have an extra - say - 300 g of muscle evenly distributed on all legs etc. Smile

lizzieoak · 14/11/2016 02:16

True enough Weeds, they could have been a wee bit younger than we thought.

Fluffy One has never been very playful so I thought not, but perhaps he's just always preferred real murder to pretend play. Brains, however, is not as murderous, unless you're an upholstered chair, Persian carpet or shoes. Man, does he hate shoes.

Ragdoll keep growing until they are four. Mine is two and appeared to double in size over winter, but we weighed him and he has only put on half a kilo so it's mostly fluff.
