I think my Flynn would cope - he is a siamese & very person orientated

I reckon I could take him for walks if he wasn't so lazy - we took our previous to tenporary accommodation for about 6 weeks & that worked (apart from her stalking a deer she fancied for breakfast)

What do you think? Are there Cat friendly cottages to rent?

There are plenty of pet friendly places but might be worth phoning to check a cat is OK before booking. Many moons ago, I have also taken a rabbit on holiday and that was no problem either.

Will do

I think on the whole cats like their own environment with familiar smells and a routine in their own territory.

I would not take Sparklingcat away to a strange place. Plus I doubt many places would be keen on having a cat complete with litter tray in their holiday let.

It depends on the cat sparkling - there's no way I'd even consider taking the cat I have now anywhere, not even a cattery if I could avoid it, she's a very timid wee thing with strange people or situations, who spends half her day off out hunting. She's happiest at home with someone coming in to feed her and give a quick fuss. She misses DD if she's not there, but she'll make do with the rest of us.

But my Siamese was a completely different ball game, not only was she nearly surgically attached to me while I was in, she used to follow me to people's houses (when I went to visit) and demand entrance, then beat up their cat for having the cheek to be in their own house, a few times she ended up coming on car trips while I was dropping off/picking up the DC from places because it was easier than getting her to stay at home and she hated me going away without her, even if the rest of the family were there.

So we did look into taking her with us, some places that accept pets state dogs only, some were quite happy to have a cat. But because of other things we ended up not going.

I always took my cat away with me, but she was an indoor cat. She seemed to enjoy it, and always settled in well.

She got too old for it, and we stopped going when she was 18, about 4 years before she died. We used to pay a cat sitter to look after her instead.

My cats now , I know, would refuse to come!

Lots of cottages will take cats, many won't though. You have to spend a bit more time looking. I now own a holiday cottage, and I will allow cats when we start renting it out.

Our three are coming with us at Christmas. We have a 9 year old girl, a 9 month old boy and will have a 14 week old kitten (she arrives in 9 days)I found a cottage though Sykes which was advertised on a cat friendly site, but the owner had to be contacted before the booking was accepted. We are only doing this because we have two kittens , we won't use catteries and we don't want to leave them with our pet sitter until the two littlies are older. IF this works well, we will bring them next year. We certainly won't be letting any of them go out!
We have travelled with our cats before but took the then two, to my MIL's house. She lived the other end of the country and was in hospital for 6 months coming to the end of her life. We just couldn't bear to leave the cats for such long periods of time so we took them. They travelled well, but we nearly expired in a house with all the windows closed(to keep then Boycat in )during a very hot summer. However we had no regrets taking them, they wanted to be with us and we found huge comfort in them being there. Made the unbearable, bearable.
Hope your trip goes well OP.

We used to take 4 away on a three hour drive. None of them travelled well.

cozietoesie · 23/11/2016 22:09

All of mine have travelled fine. It wasn't their favourite thing but they put up with it with reasonable grace. Only one 'accident' that I can recall and that was a stray poo - none of them have ever peed in their carrying boxes.
