Why do cats want to join you when you're in the bathroom?

Why ? If I dare to shut the door properly without him in with me he has almost tunnelled a hole under the door by time I open itGrin what is their fascination on being in the bathroom with us.

I like to think it's because when you're a cat you're vulnerable to predators when you're pooping and they want to watch our backs for us to make sure we can poop in safety. Grin

TroysMammy · 07/11/2016 21:56

When Troy was ill I put his litter tray in the bathroom. It was quite unnerving when having a poo, him paddling in the litter and proceeding to poo too. The heavy breathing and huffing and puffing from him when pushing one out was quite unnecessary. He used to join me in a wee too.

When I was cleaning my teeth he would stand up on the toilet seat and put his paws on my shoulders.

TwuntingCrow · 07/11/2016 21:58

Apparently they do this only to people they care about : are attached to ..
In the wild, they are at their most vulnerable when they are peeing - stuck in one spot - so they accompany us in case we need protecting.
Well that's the evolutionary theory behind it - TwuntingCat1 does it just to piss me off I'm sure !!

whattheseithakasmean · 07/11/2016 21:59

Our cat likes to get into the toilet. We used to be an 'if its yellow let it mellow' family, but can't risk it anymore - if the toilet lid isn't down she'll climb in and paddle about. Much delight to be had in handing a cat to a family member and then declaring she has 'toilet paws'. Grin

Potentialmadcatlady · 07/11/2016 21:59

I don't even try shutting the door anymore and always have an audience and generally at least one comes in and goes to the tray in the bathroom...the kitten likes to stick her head down behind my bum and watch 'the action' as it happens..then she jumps up on back of toilet to 'help' push the button to flush the toilet...

LotisBlue · 07/11/2016 22:06

Aww so she's actually being sweet trying to protect my back when I'm on the toilet Grin

She does sometimes eat a giant spider for me

firstdatesfear · 07/11/2016 22:10

I had two kittens when I lived abroad once, one ic them particularly thought I was its Mum and every day when I'd get back from work she'd follow me into the wet room and she'd wee down the shower tpdrain at the same time I'd use the toilet...!

Laska5772 · 07/11/2016 22:14

We still have a shower over (old fashioned oval) bath , Barney likes to get IN with me whilst it is still on ! (then he will sit in the wet bath whist I am towelling.. (then i have to rub the cat dry and clean the bath..)

I cant wait until we update our bathroom and get rid of the bath ,. (we've only been here 10 years so its obviously not urgent even though we had it on the to do list for as soon as we moved in. At this rate he may not be here to see it .. (ooh,, horrid thought Sad)

SquirrelPaws · 07/11/2016 22:27

BigFurry often bites my knees while I'm sitting on the loo. Tonight he wandered in while I was in the bath, put his paws and his furry face over the edge, and gave me a look at absolute bafflement, as if to say 'WHY are you in a bowl of water reading a book? You could do that in comfort and dryness elsewhere.'

RubbishMantra · 08/11/2016 13:57

Little M used to watch intently, then as soon as I got off, he'd jump onto the loo seat and make a grab for the soggy, used loo paper. I learned to flush fast.

MCat likes to accompany me up and down the stairs. I like to think it's because he's a gentleman, but most likely he's keeping an eye on his investment, (slave).

Mistykit · 08/11/2016 14:07

One of mine often has a wee with me (her tray is in the bathroom obv). The other one isn't too bothered about being in the bathroom but absolutely hates the door being closed. She likes to play in the bath (when it's dry) ... she learned the hard way with that once and jumped into a full bath while I was reading a book. Tres amusing for me.. not so much for her or my kindle

HarHer · 12/11/2016 12:52

My eldest cat comes into the bathroom to rub against the plastic toilet paper wrapper. She has some sort of 'thing' about soft, plastic wrappers. The other two cats' 'use the bath as a skid pan and play hunting games with the shower curtain.

cozietoesie · 12/11/2016 13:17

That happened to me many years ago, Misty, and it wasn't too amusing for me at the time. (I was naked and the cat was wet and panicking. Grin)

Rollergirl1 · 12/11/2016 13:40

Our cat always pushes the door open and comes on with me when I go to the loo. We tend to have mainly showers nowadays but he would always sit and watch when the kids were in the bath.

The poor boy has just had his tail amputated after it got mangled and is confined to indoors for the next 10 days. He refuses to use the litter tray I bought for him and was starting to get really concerned until I captured him doing this this morning....

Such a clever boy!

Why do cats want to join you when you're in the bathroom?
Excited101 · 12/11/2016 14:39

That's amazing Roller! I can't believe he figured that out just from watching you, and managed to put into context so well.

gingerboy1912 · 12/11/2016 18:20

Grin what a clever cat

OP posts:
nooka · 13/11/2016 07:18

Apparently it's possible to train your cat to do that. Not sure I've ever managed to train our cats to do anything!

One of our cats likes to sit on the edge of the bath and look at me, he then gradually lowers his tail until it goes into the bath. After a while he jumps off and then gets very cross that his wet tail drips onto his head. He does have very thick fur and so I think doesn't feel his tail getting wet, but you'd think he'd learn after a while.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/11/2016 07:34

My sister trains her cats to use the loo, apparently you start off with a litter tray which fits over the loo the you remove sections of it slowly as they get used to it. Helps it you have a spare loo.

Now they have a flushing cat loo which is plumbed into the mains, they got it from Craig's List.

My cat pisses up against the neighbour's garage doorHmm

Brilliant pic of cat on the loo!

Excited101 · 13/11/2016 10:15

I've seen cats that have been trained to use the loo, but one that has figured it out from watching a human who normally goes outside is pretty clever!

I've never heard of a plumbed in cat toilet though, fab idea!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/11/2016 10:35

It's amazing!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/11/2016 10:37

Wrt plumbed cat loo- pretty sure it's an American thing only, not seen anything like that in the UK!

user1475501383 · 15/11/2016 00:28

As I sit on the loo, DCat takes the opportunity to chew on my bare legs. She often gives a few licks afterwards. It's her way of showing affection at least that's my preferred motive for her

OlennasWimple · 15/11/2016 00:31

Yup, plumbed in cat loos are more of a thing here in the US (where indoor cats are more common - ours aren't legally allowed outside)

TBF to my cats, one doesn't really care where I am unless it's in the kitchen therefore there is a chance of food, but the other one hates any closed door and wants to join me on the other side, whether that's bathroom or bedroom
