Breeder sold us a very sick cat 😹 :(

Any advice gratefully received.

My DM recently adopted a cat from a high profile breeder. He is a 3 yr old Siamese ex-stud and altho DM had some reservations about the way the breeder treated him (rough handling) once she saw him she loved him and took him home. It cost her 250 pounds. The breeder advised the cat was on a grain free diet due to stomach issues.

Since she brought him home six weeks ago he has been sick on a day basis, sometimes up to four, five times. He has diarrhoea and painful bowel movements. He is otherwise affectionate and loving. My DM is beside herself with worry. She has been back and forth to the vets who have put him in high dose steroids (not working) and different diets (not working). It has so far cost her over a thousand pounds in treatment. When contacted the breeder admitted he had never seen a vet and claims he was never sick when with her. This is BOLLOCKS obvs

My poor mum and this poor cat. I've tentatively suggested to her that his quality of life is most probably horrible atm. I don't know what to do. She has recently retired and doesn't have a lot of money and even though she loves him cleaning up sick and poo every day is draining for her and pretty miserable. Vet is now talking about removing part of his bowel. Breeder obviously won't discuss anymore, and can't can't offer medical history.

Anyone got any ideas? I think this is beyond a dietary issue. Cat is a Siamese (I have one too) so sensitive tummy anyway :(

I had a Siamese girl who when stressed by any small thing (and this cat will doubtless be extremely stressed by moving away from its home) would get into a cycle of vomiting and diahorrea.

We spent a fortune at the vets on tests etc but nothing particular was ever diagnosed. What worked for us was peridale capsules, prescribed by the vet which bulked out her stools and slowed down her digestive system. A few weeks of these and she would be ok again - like a digestive system reset.

We went through many cycles of this during her lifetime (very highly strung madam that she was) but she lived a happy life to a reasonable age and died of something unrelated (breast cancer) in the end.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/11/2016 16:19

How is he today?

CurtainsforRonnie · 06/11/2016 20:33

God, this is awful. I feel for you, DM.& DC Sad I really hope it can be treated.

The breeder needs reporting for neglect surely?

CurtainsforRonnie · 06/11/2016 20:36

And as another poster said - Addinson's disease is a possibility?

Shriek · 06/11/2016 20:43

What an awful experience. Poor cat and DM!

Lots here have said its not unheard of and is a thing. Hope its just that as some very helpful for helping break cycle of D&V.
As for breeder!! If this cat was a prized tom stud cat he wld surely be micro-chipped?!? Doesnt make sens any of it. Pleaseof refusal to jelp cat and leaving it t shpildnot have any cats . RSPCA could surely act on the cruelty
you report (treatment of him and refusal to help suffering cat now)

Shriek · 06/11/2016 20:48

Please name and shame breeder to save the fates of other poor cats.
There is no way a male would need to retire unless something wrong. It would be easy to phone local vets to track down cat by bteeder and cats name unless thats been changed

CurtainsforRonnie · 07/11/2016 07:02

Yes, it is strange the breeder didnt microchip.

If she was rough handling them in front of DM, what the hell goes on bwhind closed doors. RSPCA & there must be someone else you can report to, in terms of her 'breeding' neglect.

HustleVandango · 08/11/2016 21:05

Hi all, sorry haven't updated sooner. According to DM he was caged at the breeders and growled at her when she (the breeder) picked her up - I'm sure anyone familiar with the Siamese growl will know the noise I mean here.
She has a lot of cats, and is breeding dogs too afaik. I think my DM is going to try to speak to her again when she gets back - his medical history is obviously going to affect diagnosis and I'm amazed she doesn;t have it.

Cat is back though, phew. DM collected him on Saturday and now he is off the steriods he hasn't been sick since then. Vet recommended simplifying things so he is off meds (steriods and injections) and is on a wet/dry food diet (the 'i' diet I think she said) but is hoping to try raw feeding if he remains well.

He goes in tomorrow for his blood test which DM has asked for and then once that is done we should have a better picture of what's happening. DM said he hasn't left her side since he got home, and she is beside herself with joy that he is feeling better. Four days is a record for no puking! (No idea about bowels though, sorry lads)

Here he is being, adorable - thanks to everyone - going to google Addisons now altho we can't do anything for a couple of weeks :(

Poor little boy ,sounds like he's had a crap start to life but has landed on his feet with your mum .

Wolfiefan · 08/11/2016 21:12

Does your mum have the actual vaccination certificate? It may have details of vet. Could your new vet call old vet? May offer some insights.
And I'm sorry. This sounds awful.

Vinorosso74 · 08/11/2016 21:15

Pleased he's stopped puking. Poor fella being caged, disgusting.
I hope the blood test provides some answers and he's ok. He looks nicely snuggled on the photo.

HustleVandango · 08/11/2016 21:52

Vinorosso74 he's on one of the 740,000 beds my DM bought for him the day he arrived. I think there is one in every room in the house.

Wolfie When we first realised the vomiting was problematic DM approached the breeder before we took him to the vet - she initially phoned but the breeder wouldn't come to the phone. Instead DM spoke to her friend who said the cat had never been sick in the whole time the breeder had him. This set the tone, really. On the advice of the vet DM made email contact again to get a comprehensive history and all she has is the vaccination certificates from 2014 I think. He hadn't been wormed or flea'd or anything since then. Breeder maintains his problem is not sickness, just mild IBS treatable with a grain free diet. She won't offer further help. It's frustrating but he is so much happier at DM's that at least he's landed on his feet (HILARIOUS CAT JOKE)

Floral just saw you made the same joke before me damnit

Many Siamese breeders cage the males, Vino. It makes socialisation problematic but I guess they don't care about that too much.

Vinorosso74 · 08/11/2016 22:19

Hustle a friend of mine has a cat bed in every room too.
Cozie no I guess the breeders don't care, this one certainly doesn't. Just seems cruel to me.

cozietoesie · 08/11/2016 22:55

They'll often have 'cages' in the sense of 'enclosed runs' but socialisation with humans might still be a big problem there. Luckily, Hustle's mum's boy looks like a big soppy now that he's found his home. Smile

Floralnomad · 08/11/2016 23:20

My mum has a Ragdoll and he has a bed in every room except the dining room where he has 3 beds and his tent - he likes to pretend he's at Glastonbury when it's hot weather .

furlinedsheepskinjacket · 09/11/2016 01:17

awww love the photo - he looks well tbh so i think thats a good sign

my siamese could never have a microchip - vet said too skinny

CurtainsforRonnie · 09/11/2016 01:29

Lets see what the blood tests are like, beautiful boy he is Star
