Fleas, fleas, fleas, fleas, FLEAS!!!! and swearing...

Two cats and I am totally and utterly sick to the back teeth of God damn biting shitting, jumping, munching, bastard, twatting FLEAS!!!!

I have had animals all my life of one type or another so I am well use to sodding fleas...HOWEVER, this year the little gits seem to be happily pinging around in biblical proportions. I have even found them pissing around in my daughters hair!!!!!!!! (This is honestly the first time ever I have found this. It is astonishing although obviously believable, I just haven't come across this before in all the years of encountering fleas)
Flea traps - No
Flea collars - Ok for a while
Flea treatment - Hit and miss
Salting the carpet - Dunno yet...supposed to dry up eggs...?
Hoovering the carpet - ffs!
I even resorted to putting a few drops of Olbus oil on the carpet because apparently the fucking fleas don't like Eucalyptus? Anyway, it seems to have MAYBE calmed down a little except that now the living room smells like an old mans pocket.
Please, please, PLEASE does anyone have any tips or tricks that aren't inmediately obvious given that I know the little fuckers are unscrupulous freeloading greedy lodgers that I'm finding so hard to kick out. Also they have tiny arses...maybe I need to buy a little boot to kick them with?

Anyway. HELP! please

Speaking seriously now, is there something going on this year with fleas?
My oldest cat is 14 and never had them before now.

SmellySphinx · 09/10/2016 16:29

This is Sphinx and his bollocks. Sorry. He likes to pose though.
I was going to put a together
Sexy man cat Sphinx calender, any Lady Cat takers?

Yeah I think there may well be something going on this year, there was something on R4 about them. If I remember correctly I think Rentokil calls had gone up 140% due to fleas this year. I could be wrong

Awwww he is a beauty. I want to rub his belly. Not if he still has fleas though Grin

PosiePootlePerkins · 09/10/2016 16:35

Yes it is supposed to be a bad year for fleas. Loads of threads about it including my own. Best thing I did was the program injection recommended by another MNer, wasn't cheap but was worth it for extra peace of mind. That in conjunction with the advocate and spraying etc has seen them off.
We had the coming back from holiday thing, our old cat had passed away and new cat hadn't arrived, and so there was no host. DH and DS, who they loved to bite the best, walked around the house letting them jump on while I caught them and drowned them. Such fun. Wonderful way to end a holidayAngry

SmellySphinx · 09/10/2016 16:38

Yeah it's absolutely horrid when you have carpets but we rent and I can't replace them for something else. There is a corner in the house where we charge our phones, they seem attracted to the heat and you can see them jumping around on the screens. Ugh.

I had a thought (dangerous I know but hear me out) it sounds incredibly morbid. Actually now I'm thinking twice about posting it but. Sod it.

Flea traps which are poo as a trap in itself and I only imagine you use them to gauge the severity of infestation...BUT say if you had a shallow dish of blood (obviously I'm not saying sacrifice something or cut yourself) but say if you weren't squemish and could get hold of a thimble of pigs blood... would that attract fleas and drown the twats? I know it's minging but essentially would that work?

Just a thought.

I like black pudding so pigs blood was the first thought btw

PosiePootlePerkins · 09/10/2016 16:42

Nice. Blood bath. Come for a nice swim little fleasConfused As far as I know they are attracted to body warmth and vibrations of an animal/person passing by.
I am now slightly worried about your next suggestion regarding vibrations....

SmellySphinx · 09/10/2016 16:43

HYPOTHETICAL of course.

God don't you just hate the internet sometimes!!!!

SmellySphinx · 09/10/2016 16:44

Hahaha sorry I said it was dangerous for me to think and I won't even say what my thoughts are.

I cut my finger on a tak the other day. It was pissing blood for hours. If only I had known I would have saved it. Hmmmm.

SmellySphinx · 09/10/2016 16:46

It's always the smallest cuts that seem to spew out your entire blood supply!

Wait to I tell you how it happened. I was pushing in a drawing pin and the spike came through the flat side. Owwwweeee!

drinkupbaby · 09/10/2016 16:53

I'm another one that recommends indorex and advocate. We were absolutely inundated this summer and indorex was the one that finally got rid of them completely. We now use advocate on our cat because it kills any fleas that hop on within 2 hours so they have no chance of reproducing! Good luck

SmellySphinx · 09/10/2016 16:53

Oh my God. OW!!!!

OP posts:
SmellySphinx · 09/10/2016 16:56

Advocate and Indorex it is then!
Thanks so much.

I am now going for a shower if only to stop myself from writing what my thoughts were about vibrations.

Make it a cold shower sphinx! This thread has made me Grin I was so stressed when we had our flea problem, I could have used a bit of your humour!
Hope you get it sorted soon.

30ish · 09/10/2016 17:30

Put shallow bowls of water with quite a lot of washing up liquid in them around the rooms. The fleas are attracted to the washing up liquid, they jump in and then drown.

dementedma · 09/10/2016 19:11

This is out resident fleabag, General Jericho Jones...Jerry to his mates! He's a big lad so lots of room for fleas!

Fleas, fleas, fleas, fleas, FLEAS!!!! and swearing...
DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/10/2016 23:50

So after using Advocate again today I just inspected cat's bedding and there were three little fleas dying so I squashed them flat! Shows the Advocate is working as they were half dead. Hooray!

RosesShouldBeInTins · 10/10/2016 08:00

My cat has also had fleas this year and we are nearly there in getting rid. Our vet said that they've gone years with hardly any flea queries....people have probably stopped treating their cats routinely because they never get fleas (hand up, guilty!), and now they are everywhere!

The RIP Fleas website has quite useful info on the life cycle of fleas and explains that it will take approx three months to properly get rid! Yuk.

Bogburglar75 · 10/10/2016 08:07

Pampered PFC has fleas. Doing as all others here, treating him with advocate, spraying carpets, hoovering like a loon and washing bedding. We aren't there yet. Doesn't seem to be bothering the huge great fleabag one bit.

Is Indorex better than the other sprays or do they all have similar active ingredients?

I gather it's important to remember to change the Hoover bag each time you vacuum as otherwise they just live happily in the bag yuk

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/10/2016 08:11

The vet told me to spray the flea spray into the hoover bag.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/10/2016 08:13

I have a hand held Dyson and I've been inspecting the contents in the manner of a CSI Grin
