Neighbour using rat poison

I've found 3 dead rats in our garden. Our neighbour doesn't keep her barns very clean & I was aware that there were rats about; we'd put a tunnel trap down.
Anyway, when I found the rats I went and asked her partner if they'd put poison down. He said that they had. I told him that I was worried for my cat & that 4 years ago our other girl had died horribly after the neighbour had put poison down.
He said that 1 of their cats had died yesterday.
I'm so worried, we've been doing flea treatments on our girl then putting her outside whilst we do the house.
Our vets is now closed except for emergencies.
Is there anything that I can do?

The vet dispensed vitamin K and was insistent that she finish the course, so with the 21 day for poison to work that you've said, brittany that makes sense.
I wish that we'd been told. Both my other neighbours have cats too, so they've all been put at risk.
Still, our girl seems sprightly enough this morning and is disgusted with me for not letting her out. Smile

It's not illegal to use, but it is no longer permitted to use toxic baits routinely. Non-toxic indicator blocks should be used routinely, then if a problem is identified, break back traps. Poison is only allowed if all else fails. This came into force earlier this year. Sorry if this wasn't clear in earlier post!

No, it was clear, I was just being lazy with how I responded.

From 1/6/16 people using rodenticids / anti-coagulant biocides must have a certificate of competence. If a farmer belongs to a farm assurance scheme they are deemed competent until 31/12/17 after which they must receive training in the use of poisons.

Thanks for that information weedsnseeds it might come in useful! Wink

well they are still selling rat poison in B&Q- do I need to stock up? Rats are clever bastards, have never caught one in a trap an more suffering in a trap trhat half works than in poison.
Not sure what you expect your neighbour to do really- just let the rats breed?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 19/09/2016 20:33

The OP has already said the neighbour doesn't keep her barns or chickens or goats clean. Maybe that would be a start rather than poisoning her own and OP's cats.

FrancesNiadova · 19/09/2016 21:11

I don't think that you should just leave poison lying around. One of my other neighbour's cats is really ill at the moment. We're keeping our girl in, & giving her the vitamin K every day.
We also have 3 owls living in 1 of our trees. If the owls ate a poisoned rat they would die too. Sad
I do understand that rats need to be got rid of, but it should be done properly, by a trained person and the place should be clean; it's worse than Steptoe's yard at the moment.
