Will my cat ever be a lap cat?

Not that I'm hugely bothered, she's only been here 5 weeks, and we love her to bits anyway, but....
She just doesn't seem interested in being physically close to us. Will accept a few strokes on her own terms, if and only if she's in the mood, rubs around my legs when hungry, mews a bit and we have a little chat sometimes, but otherwise seems very happy and content in her own company.
We have never ever pressed cuddles on her, or picked her up when she doesn't want it, we've learnt to read her quite well and only give her what she seems to want.
I just miss my old dear puss curled up on my lap, she'd jump on at any given opportunity (often most inconvenient!) and I'd love to think that one day new cat might just snuggle up...
Any insights or stories to give me hope?

Too warm for laps.

RubbishMantra · 16/09/2016 20:12

YY to too warm for laps.

MCat doesn't understand that humans get hot too, but has settled for a proprietary paw or 2 on my lap. With a talon grip.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/09/2016 20:27

Cats get incredibly hot though. After half an hour you can toast marshmallows on them but they will whinge like mad if you try and move them off.

I usually slide my cat onto a blanket saying "it's the same, it's the same" while he gives me evils.

I'm with cozie Grin
Mine sits on me ALL the time. Even when he's not sat on me, he's sat next to me with a paw curled around my finger or on my arm. Or blinking at me. Or staring at me while I sleep Hmm
Just occasionally I wish for a more normal one!

cozietoesie · 18/09/2016 14:54

You grow used to it, though. I used to worry about the non-Siamese because they were so self-contained and untalkative.

Comparatively speaking of course. Smile

I'm currently being sat on... Hmm

I miss lap cats as well Sad. I used to have a tabby who wasn't particularly demonstrative but jumped on my lap and slept at the end of my bed. If I got up in the night for a wee she got up and had a wee in the litter tray, synchronised tinkle tinkle tinkle sounds

Sherlock , although lovely, isn't a lap cat 🐱, but rather a grouchy character

DramaAlpaca · 18/09/2016 16:13

My old boy is 15 and has never been a lap cat. He'll occasionally sit next to me, but never on me. I miss it because I've previously had lap cats & I love it when they curl up on you.

Our other cat will happily sit on my DSes, but won't sit on me Sad. I think it might be because I'm the old boy's preferred human.

Or it could be because we also have two dogs and one of them is usually cuddled up to me, despite me telling them I'm a cat person, not a dog person.

Ours got a lot snugglier when we caved and let her in the bedroom for lie ins - she prefers to sit on chests and be worn as a scarf, rarely on laps.

CharleyDavidson · 18/09/2016 16:32

Ours is about a year old and is still settling on what he likes.

At first he seemed to have 'set' places to sit/be in different rooms. Would only lie on the floor or in his bed in the living room. The only place he'd sit in our bedroom would be the window sill. And he liked under DD1's bed.

He looooooves DD2 though. Will snuggle right up to her (only on her bed though) and tries to sleep on her face shoulder.

Recently, though, he's started coming to sit next to me on the sofa on an evening, even right by my legs if the recliner part of the sofa is up. And last night (for the first time) he slept on my bed all night, leaning against my legs.

Just seen these replies, and it seems to be a mixed bag, cats being cats in other words and pleasing themselves! In true cat fashion, my DH came home after a week away, fell asleep on the sofa and she jumped up onto him and almost sat on him before thinking better of it! That's the closest she's come, and chose DH who a) isn't really fussed about cats and b) has done precisely none of the feeding/letting out/waiting up for her to come in at night!
Ah well at least she's shown potential....

My Aunt had a phobia about the feel of fur - I gather that it felt to her like chalk screeching on board or biting a piece of tinfoil. As a result, she couldn't abide cats.

Guess who Thirdcat made a gleeful beeline for when she arrived to visit? Like an arrow from a bow it was, as soon as the sitting room door was opened! Grin

PosiePootlePerkins · 18/09/2016 17:53

Cozie why do they do that? How do they know? You almost have to admire their ability to seek out the person who least wants them, and then decide that person is going to have them anyway! Grin
