What are people's experiences with this shelter - are they generally helpful etc?

Gorgeous wee scraps. Smile

cozietoesie · 11/09/2016 16:05

I remember, many years ago, being given a largeish picture of a black panther taken at night. All there was to see was eyes and teeth! Grin The most impressive picture I ever had - and be hanged to people's 'timelines'.

Thanks for your kind words everyone. And yes I do sometimes wonder what London would be like for cats if CHAT didn't exist. I don't think there is a street in East London where we haven't done something. And we seem to be the only active charity. The RSPCA's oh so helpful advice if anyone calls about cats breeding in their garden/round the bins of their flats etc is either 'call CHAT' or more commonly 'don't feed them and they'll go away'.

And Cozie, yes we do have periodic open days. We should have more when our new cattery is finally finished. It's easier to show people a big area dedicated to all the cats than it is to show them a myriad of different rooms, and cats in hospital baskets and queen cages in corridors and in store cupboards, and the operating theatres and in the office and in toilets - you get the picture. Although I know that even when we get the new facilities there will still be too many cats and we will still have them dotted around, but still, open days should be easier.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/09/2016 12:39

I wish CHAT covered my area. I'm obviously not looking for a cat at the moment (Mr Fussy Pants wouldn't like sharing!) but I really admire CHAT and they seem to be more realistic than the rescue Harry came from.

This thread ahas come at a good time

Following the death of our much-loved 20-year old, I'm beginning to feel the yearning.

We aren't so far away

TCN - do you mind me asking - what do you think about someone who has a garden but would like an adult cat who's not fussed about going outside, or can't? Since our lovely girl became more sedate, we were able to encourage birds into the garden, which has made me very happy. I'd hate to lose that

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 14/09/2016 21:25

They've got several young adult cats suitable for an indoor home on the Canning Town website - Gracie for example. www.celiahammond.org/canning-town/index.php/8-animals-needing-homes/465-gracie

cozietoesie · 14/09/2016 21:31

She looks a bit wary (understandably) but very loving underneath. Smile

NotYoda · 15/09/2016 05:53

If I am honest, I am worried about the FIV though. Having had a cat with two chronic illnesses, I think I can cope with a level of disability (e.g. deafness, missed limbs, deformity) but not sure about potentially life-threatening illness.

I will google more about FIV

SybilsLeaves · 15/09/2016 06:13

We've had 4 cats from CHAT Lewisham - the first was an FIV cat as we lived in a flat. He was the sweetest old gentleman I've ever known (called The Venerable Bede, fittingly!) he had a runny nose most of the time, but you otherwise wouldn't have known he had anything wrong with him. He died of old age rather than FIV related. Since then we had Hobbes, with hyperthyroidism, who was also fine other than being skinny and permanently hungry, Calvin, who had battery acid thrown over him as a kitten 😡, and Luther, who was a feral street cat. The last 2 are still around -
lots of love and treats, plus regular steroid injections for Calvin from CHAT to cope with occasional flare ups of anxious over washing, have made them the most fantastic cats. Don't dismiss 'problem' cats out of hand - ours have all been fab!

SybilsLeaves · 15/09/2016 06:19

Our 'feral' street cat, 6 months in...

SybilsLeaves · 15/09/2016 06:21

Oops, forgot pic!

se22mother · 15/09/2016 06:30

Our beloved cat who has been with us 7 years was hand picked from celia Hammond Canning Town. Celia took care to choose the perfect fit for our family

Thanks Sybils and se22

NotYoda FIV isn't a big deal at all generally. Most cats with it seem totally unaffected and end up dying of old age. We also don't say that FIV cats need to be kept indoors. Gracie needs restricted access to the outside because of her paw, not because of the FIV.

As a general question though about having a garden but not letting a cat out, well that would be fine if you get a cat that isn't bothered about going out, but it would be very difficult if the cat actually wanted to go out but shouldn't for some reason as you will probably find it difficult to physically stop the cat from going into the garden and would also probably make you feel guilty.

I think a middle aged/old cat would be your best bet. They tend to like to sit in the sun but aren't bothered about or aren't physically up to chasing birds.

We do have lots of cats though so it's normally possible to find the right cat for the right situation and there isn't much that we rule out totally provided that the potential owners are sensible and that they are willing to consider a cat that would suit their situation.

For example we recently turned down a home that was right next to a busy road with only a very low wall between the garden and the road. We said we would be happy to give them an older, street-wise cat, but they insisted on young cats/kittens. When we said they would probably end up dead they said 'well that's just a risk you have to take isn't it?' No, it damn well isn't!

thecatneuterer · 15/09/2016 11:34

I'm curious to know why the OP started this thread. It looks as though we're not going to find out.

cozietoesie · 15/09/2016 11:52

They may have wanted to complain about CHAT's services. It happens, if so.

NotYoda · 15/09/2016 16:32

thecatneuterer

Oh yes, there's no way I'd prevent a keen cat from going out. I guess what I want is a sedate middle-aged/older or a younger one who can't, as you say
