Our very old cat needs That Trip to the vet. But she's asleep. Talk sense into me.

Poor old mog. She has hyperthyroidism, heart disease and dodgy kidneys. She was sick at the weekend and then escaped and went missing for two days.

Yesterday she came home looking so starved and tatty, won't eat (so won't have any of her pills) and has only drunk the bit of water I've put in with a syringe. Has licked a scrap of ham and sniffed a Dreamie.

I'll admit I was hoping she'd just snooze her way to oblivion last night, given how distressed she gets in the car, but she's still with us, occasionally pottering a few feet - slowly, but not staggering - and asking to go out.

Now she's asleep on the floor again. I know what I should do, but she looks so peaceful and calm.

I'm distracting myself on here until the vet turns up. Not quite the definition of 'working from home' but I don't think the world will end if I catch up tonight.

Well done, hope he's not too long. Your picture made me well up too; but she has done well to get to such an advanced age. I

your lovely darling girl...

thinking about you both so much right now

RigginsCanRead · 24/08/2016 13:27

Poor you & poor cat. We had to put our cat to sleep a few months ago. You are doing the right thing, although it's really tough. Flowers for everyone

cozietoesie · 24/08/2016 13:37

Poor old lass. Well done for putting her needs first.

Thinking of you.

Heyheyheygoodbye · 24/08/2016 13:39

You're doing her a final kindness. Bless you Flowers

Lancelottie · 24/08/2016 14:41

All over, very calmly. The vet had barely started the injection when he looked at me and said 'She's gone, you know. I was going to warn you that they sometimes sigh or moan, but she's just gone straight out.' Thank you to all those who suggested doing it this way. It was as near perfect an ending as it could be.

DS (the one with ASD) and I have had a good weep and planned where best to bury her (deeply, don't worry) and what sort of tree she should have. Catnip around the base, he thinks. Sounds fitting.

Oh goodness, heart breaking decision but sound to me you've absolutely done the right thing. Much love to you and your family.

MrsToffee · 24/08/2016 14:48

Sorry that you've had to go through this Flowers we had to have our family cat pts around 6 years ago, similar situation to yours and I still well up thinking about his final moments but it was absolutely the right and kind decision. Planting a tree with some catnip sounds like a lovely idea.

Squeegle · 24/08/2016 14:49

Oh I am so glad it was peaceful. And burying her in the garden sounds absolutely the right thing to do. We put our cat in the garden. I was always pleased he was still there and planted a nice bush on top to remind me where he was .

cozietoesie · 24/08/2016 14:51

I'm glad it was calm. Take care, all of you.

ShotsFired · 24/08/2016 14:52

What a lovely way for her to go, safe in her own home with her mum nearby.

I love the idea of the tree too. xxx

NotYoda · 24/08/2016 14:55

Oh Lancelottie. I totally identify. I have to make that decision for my 20 year old soon.

I am glad it was peaceful. You'll have good memories of her

Lance this really touched me. I've only ever had dogs in my house ( none at the moment)and I was there when a beloved childhood dog was pts. How loving you were to your beloved cat.

RIP puss - and you gave her a good long life and a peaceful ending.

just to warn you that it is a good idea to put a few bricks or a paving slab over the grave for a couple of weeks. Foxes, badgers etc have no respect for a much loved family friend.

ClarkL · 24/08/2016 17:34

You did the best you could for her from the moment you got her to the end, being at home, where she is comfortable and with her family. Thinking of you at this difficult time

mineofuselessinformation · 24/08/2016 17:37

That sounds like a good way for you beloved cat to go, OP. Flowers

DramaAlpaca · 24/08/2016 17:40

So sorry for the loss of your lovely old girl. She was gorgeous, and such a good age. You've done the kindest thing possible for her, and I'm glad the end was so peaceful Flowers
