Thanks so much to everyone who gave advice regarding us adopting a new cat following the death of our old girl. The rescue centre were very keen for us to have her sooner rather than later, so here she is! Lottie arrived last Thursday evening and has settled in brilliantly. She cried for the first night and after that has been as good as gold. She is eating and using her litter tray. Has moments of charging around like a loony, we have a big lounge and she seems delighted to stretch her legs! And has chosen one end of a sofa as her snoozing spot in the day. She's a lovely cat, still getting used to people, happy to play but still learning how to be stroked. Definitely not a lap cat yet but maybe this will change.
Am attaching some pictures to show her off! So nice to have a cat in the home again.

Thanks for all the lovely comments everyone Smile
Cozie I hadn't thought of that, I shall do some research. Can I just say, I always look out for your pearls of wisdom, you seem to have an instinctive knowledge about all things cat!

So glad she's home. Looks like she's settling in really well.

Earlier she explored upstairs...lets just say under the king size bed is VERY interesting! DH stores loads of crap there I think she's just loving all the new smells and spaces... far too long in a little rescue pen bless her.

I'm a harness user! I used one for my old boy to get him used to going outside and his surroundings when he first went out as a kitten and when he first went out after moving home.

My new boy isn't allowed to come in to contact with other cats so pootles around the garden, the alleyway at the back and a walk round the block on his harness.

Never had any problems at all and I highly recommend it.

Ah thanks yes that is interesting. Leroy looks like one cool dude! I do wonder if she would find it stressful, she seems to want to be very independent and do her own exploring, but maybe it could work just while she gets used to her environment. Thank you for posting Smile

His harness is quite collar-like so not very restrictive and the lead is separate. I popped it on him in the house and he was a bit "wtf?" for a brief moment but that was all. Once I knew he was comfortable with it I clipped the lead on, opened the back door, and now spend large parts of my day standing around like a stuffed lemon while Leroy checks out the local vegetation.

Personally I wouldn't use one of those harnesses where there's a lot of material and you need to get paws through holes and stuff. Looks too restrictive for a cat. At the end of the day, with a twist and a tug Leroy CAN get out of the harness and I think that's important for a cat.
