We've wanted a cat for ages, thought I wnated a kitten BUT today me and dd went to the rescue centre and were chosen by this gorgeous boy! He's 6 years old, super friendly and loves sitting on laps being fussed over. Waiting for our home check visit- keep your fingers crossed! Also, any tip tips? I've been lurking in this section trying to do my research, we've never had a cat before (or rather- a cats never had us 😸)

Here's a pic isn't he a Beaut- look at that lovely fluffy tum

ShotsFired · 01/07/2016 13:00

Well? How did it go?!

Kenworthington · 01/07/2016 13:01

Yaaaaaay!!!!! She said it would be fine Smile
Only potential issue is we are going away on 8th August for a week. But someone's going to call to discuss with me

Oh. Sad the shelter rang back and said we can't have Arnie now as we will be going away in 5 weeks so he won't be fully settled in with us by the time we go away. So we just have to go back to the shelter when we come back and hope he's still there Sad

This happened to us. We fell in love with a kitten on the rspca website, but weren't in a position to have him due to holiday and then saw he was reserved by someone else. When we got back a week later he was available again as it had fallen through and we had him within two days! So if it's meant to be, it's meant to be.
A six year old cat won't be easy to home, so fingers crossed. You could maybe ask f they would reserve him for you in return for a donation toward his keep?

cozietoesie · 01/07/2016 15:52

That might be worth trying.

coffeemachine · 01/07/2016 15:58

you need a litter in any case as they recommend to keep the cat in for the first 3-4 weeks.

good luck. we got a 5 year old rescue cat in Spring and we haven't looked back.Smile

coffeemachine · 01/07/2016 15:59

oh, just saw the update. 5 weeks isn't long and even if he is taken, there will be other lovely cats that need a new home.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/07/2016 16:11

That's a shame. I second asking if you can pay his boarding fees until after you go on holiday and reserve him.

buttertoffee · 01/07/2016 16:33

wouldn't that be an awfully long time for him to be stuck where he us now? what kind of place is it? tbe cattery where our local RSPCA is having their cats consists of rather small cubicles. I wouldn't want a cat there to be stuck for too long

I'd rather let him go if the right family comes along and start looking afresh after the hols. there lots of cats that need rehoming. At least for now you are not really attched to him and it shouldn't be too hard.

ShotsFired · 01/07/2016 17:50

One of my foster cats was "reserved" by the adopters paying more than the suggested donation as they were also going away. I only accepted because they were perfect for him; and also I was a home fosterer, so he wasn't in a cattery.

If he is still there when you get back, he's meant for you. If he isn't, another cat is your cat, I promise.

cozietoesie · 01/07/2016 17:52

He's a ginger and they're sought after so I reckon the OP's chances are limited. If he was a black cat of course..........

NeedACleverNN · 01/07/2016 18:15

The shame OP. Fingers crossed he is still there. Gingers are more sought after BUT he is a 6 year old so there is a good chance he will still be there. Will keep fingers and toes crossed for you.

I can't whistle either. We just tap the bowl with the spoon and Toots comes running.

Funny about your blackbird though cosie

Kenworthington · 13/07/2016 21:25

Update in case anyone's still ar

Ffs.

Around and interested. So.... We weren't allowed to reaerve Arnie BUT a good friend of mine has a friend who's got kittens, there's one left, she's happy to keep him til we get back from our hols mid August and he's ours if we want him. Which obv- hell yeah!! He's so cute. Want to see a pic? I think he's about 6 weeks now so will be about 10 weeks when we get him. Am attaching a photo, hope it works!

That's one determined kitten. I can't believe they stopped you adopting the ginger boy.

Kenworthington · 13/07/2016 21:45

They didn't stop me but I can't reaerve him so in all likelihood he may be gone before we get back from hols and then the kitten happened! And who can resist a cute kitten?!

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 13/07/2016 22:34

He may be cute - which he certainly is - but that's a face intent on world domination if ever I saw one.

You'll be under the paw before you realise it! Grin

OnesieTheQueensSelfie · 13/07/2016 22:43

Oh my OP. What a beauty! Clearly already established as the boss but you'd have found out soon enough anyway Grin

So happy for you Flowers

Papergirl1968 · 14/07/2016 00:19

He is lovely.
What are you going to do if you get back from from holiday and Arnie is still available? Have him too? Go on, you know you really want them both!

Toddlerteaplease · 14/07/2016 00:58

How about having both if he's still around?

Kenworthington · 14/07/2016 07:20

Oh god I don't know! I hadn't thought about that. Could I go from nee having had a car to having a kitten AND a rescue at the same time?? I fear that way madness lies!

We were advised to buy a blanket, all cuddle it then we left it with the cats for the week or so before they came home.

First day they just had the run of the kitchen and utility. Then for a couple of days just downstairs then everywhere. We kept them in for four weeks I think.

We bought a lovely bed but they mainly sleep in a cardboard box with blankets or any of our beds.

They have a huge toy box full of toys but their favourite is a Pom Pom.

They have brought so much joy since the loss of my 18 year old cat.

Insurance
Toys
Food bowls
Water bowls
Toys
Collar

We also took them to meet the vet before they were ill so it wasn't so traumatic. I'm glad we did as the rspca had aged them very wrong.
