Dear God, I'm being driven slowly bonkers by our cat singing at 4 in the morning Hmm

It's proper singing too, not yowling, he's not distressed at all.

Roughly translated it means 'This is my hooooooooouse, I have people and I loooooooove them ,they give me fooooood and I quite fancy some now I wish they get up and feed meeeeeeeeeeee and plaaaaaaay.....'

We've had him since Christmas, he was a stray and just turned up in a dreadful state and he took a long time to get tame but he's gorgeous now and super tame.

He used to go out at night when he was semi feral but now sleeps on the spare bed on a special fluffy blanketBlush

He's only about a year old,and either fully Bengal or a cross. Very, very vocal, in the day he chats away , it's like a proper conversation. It's just the singing at night that's keeping us up, it's like having a new born, we're EXHAUSTED!

we put food down, play with him until he's had enough, Feliway diffuser- any other suggestions?

I have ear plugs but if they come out his singing wakes me up. I could gaffer tape them to my head...Grin

Will he settle down as he gets older?

Other than that he's gorgeousGrin

I have ear plugs at the ready and he's eaten loads tonight as Sheba was on offer. Will try the catnip tomorrow and report back with results!

You get used to it. If you tell ours to stfu he does one more grumbly miaow just to have last word.

RubbishMantra · 28/06/2016 18:23

Betty, they creep about close to the ground and everything scares them, down to the tiniest noise.

It has a similar effect that LSD has on humans, so maybe it was a bad batch. Grin I grew it myself though, so no crystal meth or crack sprayed on it!

Dame you need to add that to the contenders for the litter tray calendar.
Our cat isn't bothered by catnip (sadly). Previous cat was and he would spend hours licking and rubbing a catnip cigar.
Once we were cat sitting for our previous upstairs neighbours and their cat was indoor but still slightly feral after being born on a building site. Went up.to feed/deal with tray/ have a beer whilst playing with him and gave him some catnip. Went to bed and he we heard thumping around for ages then there was an almighty crash so I went up but he was passed out on the sofa. Turned out he'd upended his bowls and litter tray....

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/06/2016 21:20

Ha haGrin

Cat is currently flat out asleep, never seen him so relaxed!! Looks properly stoned!

OP posts:
Vinorosso74 · 28/06/2016 21:51

Yep he'll be stoned. Make sure there's plenty food out to combat the munchies Wink

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/06/2016 21:59

He's just eaten two pouches of Sheba and gone out for a wee . Didn't want to let him out but he was insistent but he said he'd be back soonGrin

OP posts:
Vinorosso74 · 28/06/2016 22:06

Haha he might be having a long philosophical conversation with a gnome or a tree if you don't have gnomes.

RubbishMantra · 28/06/2016 22:18

Aww, those splayed out paws!

Be extra careful around him tomorrow, when he gets the come-down.

He's a beautiful specimen of a Snow Bengal. Of any cat in fact. My Devon Rex has a shock of Einstein/Don King hair, atop a bald neck.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/06/2016 22:23

He was so badly neglected when we first got him, it was disgraceful. The vet was really pleased with him- I asked if he was a Bengal and she said no a tabby Hmm I was pretty sure he had some Bengal in him!

RubbishMantra · 28/06/2016 22:24

I actually want to steal him! (Not that I would of course.)

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/06/2016 22:27

When he's not yowling at stupid o'clock he's the most gorgeous cat and so tame now, can't believe how well he's settled in. We're very lucky to have himSmile

'it's such a perfect day, I want to spend it with yooooooooooooooooou'....

2am this morningHmm

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/06/2016 08:18

The most important thing is not to talk to him when he wakes you, no going down and feeding him etc.

Obviously if he's in trouble go down but not for normal yowling.

cozietoesie · 29/06/2016 08:29

And this was post-catnip?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/06/2016 08:49

Yep,post cat nip. Not any worse than normal tbh, slightly more Iggy Pop than Puccini but without the normal range for him Wink

We don't talk to him at ALL. He takes himself off outside or stays in and sings. Makes no difference if we leave our bedroom door open or not, only difference is if it's shut it's easier to ignore him. We leave food and water down at night.

My mum has had cats for years and tons of experience/ read up etc and even she said ' Goodness,he does like the sound of his own voice, doesn't he?'Grin when she heard him.

I wonder if it's his version of the dawn chorus and he joining in with the birds? We back into fields/green areas so the birds are deafening in the morning.

cozietoesie · 29/06/2016 09:23

He's young and feeling better about himself and life after recovering his fitness so I'm wondering whether there's some security thing going on?

Sounds as if you have little choice but to grit this one out and hope that he gets himself into a slightly better routine. (Keep on with the 'no contact while he's being noisy' though.)

BettyDraper1 · 29/06/2016 09:37

he said he'd be back soon

Grin haha!

Oh deary me, you need to double the dosage and administer it just before bedtime. Just think, I bet his conversations last night were of a really 'deep' nature. If only you could understand him!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/06/2016 09:42

he said he'd be back soon

But he really did Blush

I let him out and say ' you can go out but come back soon and he ALWAYS says he will with a very specific miaow Grin

Cozie-you could well be right as he was in such a state when he turned up.

BettyDraper1 · 29/06/2016 09:52

Cozie's advice is probably good advice. I trained my dog by withholding attention when he was misbehaving and now he's good as gold (I basically can't deal with the idea of telling any of them off). I know they are different animals but the same approach might work. You mentioned Feliway earlier - do you have the plugins and everything? Ooh, lastly, has he been 'done'? My two toms settled down quite a lot after they'd had the op.

cozietoesie · 29/06/2016 09:54

....more Iggy Pop than Puccini....

😀

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/06/2016 10:11

Yes, been done and yes plug in Feliway.

If we had a bigger house the early morning wakings wouldn't be a problem as he's perfect in every other way.

Cozie- he sprayed in the house a couple of weeks ago, I think that was because he heard a neighbour's cat. That never happened again after we got the plug in so you might be right wrt anxiety.

He's funny, he will sit if we tell him to and always sits when we tell him to before we put down his food dish. He's more like a dog that a cat Grin

OP posts:
DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/06/2016 10:12

I might be a little besotted with himBlush

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 29/06/2016 10:21

I can't blame you for that - he sounds great! 🙂

Are you being genuinely firm with him though?
