I took her to the vet Monday as she isn't herself, not eating well and lethargic. Vet said nothing medical she can see, but bring her back Friday if she hadn't improved. Back from work today and she had a giant bloated belly. Straight to vets for an emergency appointment. They think it's FIP. They've taken blood and a sample of the fluid in her abdomen. They gave her a strong worming tablet.however the vet isn't hopeful. I'm devestated, we've only had her around 5 weeks.

I'm so sorry, that poor girl. There was nothing else you could do when it's fip though.

Thank you all. Yes cosie, it was fip.
I was able to take the afternoon off work and spend it snuggling with her. I cried a lot, and when I did she would put a front paw on my cheek or round my neck to comfort me. Broke my heart that she was ill, yet comforting me. She did give me a jolly good wash before we went to the vets. I think she worried about my inability to keep clean Smile, it was a never ending task!

Wee soul.

(Remember to tell her breeder. I seem to think that you'd also need to cancel the other kitten, I fear. Your vet will advise.)

I'm so sorry. I've been there twice and it is heart breaking. It sounds like she knew she was very loved and loved you back and you did the right thing. Be kind to yourselves.

Yes, I've emailed the lady we got her from. Awaiting a reply.

Asked vet about another cat. She said that the virus doesn't last long out of a cats body. She advised that anything hard can be sterilised. Anything washable can be put in the machine at 60 degrees. Everything else should go. We need to wait 3 weeks before getting another cat so the virus dies. It would be good it we could steam clean things like sofas etc. Advice used to be wait far longer, but research shows 3 weeks is ample.
We definitely want another cat. We had tiggy for such a short time, yet she was such a positive addition to our family.

I'd read that the time interval was reducing.

OP I'm so sorry. I just lost my girl on the weekend and I Was devastated. It hurts so much when they're so sick and there's nothing we can do.

Getting another cat when you're ready is the right thing to do. I've decided to put my name down for a Burmese kitten that will be born in August. I'll be ready by the time it comes home.

If you have at least 10 weeks till the other kitten can leave then that sounds OK. I became very interested in the coronavirus after this happened to me twice with a gap of six years. This might be useful for you: www.gla.ac.uk/media/media_194502_en.pdf

Thanks isa I'll read that after work.we are going to hack the tree and scratch posts to pieces before dumping so someone else doesn't see them and use them.
My husband is keen to still have 2, and maybe look at getting another kitten at the same time as the other. However a) rexes are expensive and we don't have a spare £1000 right now (cost plus neutering and microchipping, second litter tray etc) and b) I knew one girl was coming- but I'm not ready to 'replace' my tiggy. .she was such a precious soul.

I really feel for you drink. It is heart breaking. I still have an old boy Birman who didn't develop FIP and is 17, despite his mum and then the friend I eventually got to replace her getting it. He's happy on his own luckily as I am sure he has the coronavirus and I couldn't risk going through it all again.
