We're thinking of maybe, possibly, becoming slaves to a feline overlord.
My gf asked a good question earlier in Tesco, looking at cat litter.

Which litter do you buy and how long does it last?
And which litter tray type is best? (Covered, in overed, self cleaning, scoop etc)
How often do you clean it or do you scoop the chunks out daily and change it less often. Iyswim?

I won't ever not have a litter tray. I think it's part of having a cat. I don't want them pooing in my garden, nor do I want them pooing in the neighbour's (if they could get there).

I also think it's important to be able to monitor it (also why I ruled out training them to use the toilet), any change in health can often first show itself in the wees and poos.

All my recent outside-going cats have used a tray - and come inside specifically for that if they needed to. I'm not saying they were never caught short while out but they preferred inside. I don't mind cleaning trays, either.

I wouldn't ever not have a tray for the same reasons as Elegant, however monitoring is harder when you have more than one cat unless you see them use the tray you don't know which cat did what in them. Mine still use the garden too, I keep an area of freshly dug soil specially to try and stop them going in the neighbours.

We adopted ours (sisters) at one year old and skipped the kitten stage, I think that was the right decision for us - house didn't get trashed, neutering was already done and very easy settling them in generally. Even so it took them a while to get used to the DCs who were 9 and 7 at the time and had no idea how to behave around cats.

I have a top entry box from zoo plus. It's huge but brilliant and prevents litter being tracked in their paws. I use intersand city classic. 15kg lasts about 3 weeks. I scoop once a day in the morning and do a full change once a week. It never ever smells and clumps really well.
