Bengal cat: AIBU?

We've been approved to adopt a Bengal cat from a local shelter.

We had the home visit recently but now I am getting nervous. We've had cats before (who have lived long and happy lives) but this seems like a completely different kettle of fish.

Are they really harder work than other cats? Do they have to remain indoors all the time - and how am I going to police this with two children in the house? Will we have to keep the windows shut all the time in case she tries to escape?

Have I lost my mind and am I going to regret this decision? Help!

Mine loves the door too!

lljkk · 16/05/2016 21:31

okay, I surrender. I've never had a moggie flop across the top of a door. That is unique.

Mind, at the vet office my fluff brain leapt to the top of the a desktop computer on a high shelf. Vet thoughtfully said "No cat has ever done that before." Clouds of dust rained down on us, as we gently removed cat from high point.

mine all love hiding high up

the moggies love the door trick - biff you as you walk through

Mine does the door thing as well. She also peed in the toilet twice when she first arrived but sadly never seen her repeat it.

HollyKate · 17/05/2016 11:14

One of mine sits on doors too! The other two can't work out how she does it, they sit there giving her dirty looks from below. That door has a perfect paw rest.

Random- my sister has a cat who uses the loo ,she trained him using a special seat!

randomcatname · 18/05/2016 00:15

Dame - I'd love to know how to encourage her to do it again as it's quite a party trick! Unfortunately I think she's one of those cats who, once she understands you want her to do something, never does it again. She teases me by wandering into the toilet, standing for a moment and then leaving again. Bizarre.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/05/2016 07:20

She used a specific cat training loo seat which is made of stuff cardboard type stuff. You have to have it in a spare loo as you have to leave it down to start off with. The seat has sections that you start to take away once the cat is more confident so eventually they're just going down the loo! One more of her cats took to it and the other refused point blankGrin

Wow twilight she's lovely.

Our two cats were terrorised for a few years by a Bengal from down the street. He took exception to them moving in to his territory (our garden and house) and regularly came up to chase them Sad.

Once he came into the house through a window and attacked one of my cats (nine months old at the time) and also attacked me when I tried to separate them. Had to go to A&E as my bitten hand swelled up. I took to chasing him down the street throwing gravel at him if he came near my house. He was very fierce though and I was scared of him. When he moved away the whole street cheered (even those with dogs, whom he also terrorised).

His owners were perpetually embarrassed by his behaviour and after the bitten hand incident came to see me with a bottle of wine and flowers Grin. When I came to see them one day (returning his collar which I had found in our garden one day) he was sleeping on a chair and his face when I came in was a picture. He was horrified and immediately got off his chair and went to stand on the stairs looking very miffed. So funny.

Be prepared for interesting times, OP. Grin

She's beautiful! I have two bengals, they are bonkers but really fun. Yes they are more needy and higher maintenance than my previous cats (moogies) but they are definitely smarter and more sociable. They can be demanding though, and LOUD but I would get bengals again, no question about it. Mine have done better as a pair though, I think they can get bored easily and they entertain each other when I can't be arsed.

crayfish · 18/05/2016 07:54

Oh and mine eat Whiskas, they are proper council estate those two though Wink

twilightcafe · 18/05/2016 12:36

Grin at Whiskas. I bought some expensive Royal Canin food for my Bengal, on the advice of the rescue centre.
Has she heck?
