Are your cats allowed out at night?

My cat was an indoor cat for his first two years but is allowed out now, with the weather we've had his window open until late and it's the only time he goes out! We give him supper at 10ish and he comes home for that and I lock the window but I think he would prefer to be out.
He lounges about the house through the day as it's noisy outside (understandable) but has access outside if he wants it.

I live in a cul-de-sac that's very quiet at night, and the closest road is quiet at night too but he tends to go the opposite direction.

I'm not sure why it makes me so nervous, maybe because I can't keep an eye on him and worry that he will go too far and get lost as he's only ever been as far as the gardens nearby.

Always called our cats in at bedtime. One chap would bounce in; it was as if he was waiting for supper and bedtime. His overnight set up was in the garage attached to the house.

Morning routine was a gentle affair. I'd open the door from the kitchen into garage. He would stroll through to dining room where I would open the patio doors. He would walk out for a fleeting gander and then come back in for his breakfast.

Our last cat was an uncooperative force and sometimes I could not get him to come in on balmy summer nights. However, I think he just lay beside the pond or generally in the garden.

All the cats I have had had a 9pm curfew. More often than not they would be on the doorstep just before. If not, especially in summer they would come in a little later after catching moths, but always in at night.

Thanks so much everyone. For now I think I'll call him in at 11 or so Smile

I keep my boys in from when it starts to get dark - so they get to stay out later in summertime.

On the odd occasion I forget to lock the flap Blush, they stay in and put themselves to bed. They're very active during the day, in and out the flap chasing insects, chattering at birds.

They both have Loca8tors on their snap-off collars, which proved invaluable when poor MCat went out in a gale, and was too freaked out to move. I found him within 10 minutes, wailing when he heard the bleepy bit on his collar go off.

My ginger boy is definitely an outdoor cat. He has a cat flap and goes in and out whenever he wants. He rarely stays out for long in the night though. But now the mornings are getting lighter I hear him go out at the crack of dawn and then comes in for breakfast when we get up.

M25 cat killer struck last night a couple of streets from me. My girl is now shut in at night, she will hate it , but tough.

LilySnape · 31/05/2016 10:14

My cats are indoor cats permanently i think its irresponsible to let them roam and shit everywhere and possibly get hurt you wouldn't let a dog out on its own so cats are the same imo Biscuit

My boy too digit, and he is extremely vocal in his protests.
We're just outside the M25 so DH thinks he'll be fine, but I'm not taking any chances will also stop him from waking up the neighbours at 2am just to say hello
