Harry and his jaw - again

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/04/2016 12:22

Poor Harry went back to the vet this morning and his jaw is still too unstable to be unwired. The wire has now been in for 13 weeks so the options are to have another wire, but that could be prone to infection, or a referral for a more permanet option. I made the choice to have him referred and I'm waiting for a call.

The poor little thing has been through so much and I'm now thinking am I doing the right thing putting him through more surgery? I've been weighing up his quality of life and he seems to be happy - he eats, sleeps, washes, plays and is no different to how he was before he broke his jaw so I can't not give him a change.

I'm so scared I'm going to lose him Sad

It's good to see him getting back to normal, although I didn't expect it to be as quick as this! I think he's tired himself out now...

Well Seniorboy would have tasked me with peeling some grapes before falling asleep - but he looks content. Smile

I gave him his tuna pouch, that's devotion as tuna is one of the most disgusting smells on earth!

What a gorgeous boy you have! :) His face looks a totally normal shape too which I find very reassuring, my poor boy is quite lopsided at the moment.

How old is he?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 19/04/2016 22:11

His face has changed shape slightly, it's narrower than it was but I think that's because he's lost all four fangs rather and not because of the broken jaw. It actually gives him a softer look to get round me!

He was a stray so we're not 100% sure how old he is but we think he's about 11. When we got him back from the vet after the initial operation it took him a few days to get back to normal. He was on Loxicom for the pain for a couple of weeks and we gave it to him in Hills a/d food which he loved.

Fingers and paws crossed that your boy is feeling better soon. Cats are very resilient (or bloody minded in Harry's case!) so I'm sure he'll be on the mend soon.

Another update - the vet has confirmed that there is no super bug and Harry doesn't need antibiotics. He is happy with the way the jaw and sockets have healed and he thinks the only risk to the jaw is if Harry gets hit in the face. He will probably have to have dentals every couple of years but the vet said only if absolutely necessary as he wouldn't put him under anaesthetic 'for a little bit of tartar'.

We've got an appointment for a check up in a couple of weeks but I may move that back by a couple more weeks to coincide with Harry's jabs to save him another trip. The vet didn't seem worried about a follow appointment now which is good.

Good news at last. Smile

How's the lad doing?

LanaorAna1 · 27/04/2016 20:40

That is superb news. Sorry I haven't posted, I've been unreasonably busy at work but I am really pleased for you both.

He really is a startlingly beautiful kitty. Hope you both have a lovely peaceful evening and can start to relax a bit now.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 27/04/2016 20:55

He's doing fine thanks cosie, apart from the lack of teeth you wouldn't know there's been anything wrong with him. We're going away on for a few days on Monday so I'm glad to know he's ok.

Thanks Lanaor. I know I'm biased but he is gorgeous and he knows it. His face has changed shape and he's now perfected a proper 'who me?' face!

Seniorboy only has one tooth, apart from his fangs. The situation doesn't trouble him. Smile

Wolfiefan · 27/04/2016 21:01

My old girl (we lost her at 19) had virtually no teeth. Didn't stop her eating Dreamies.
All the best handsome Harry and you too OP.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 27/04/2016 21:02

Harry lost all his fangs and a couple of the small teeth. He manages to gum me instead of biting now but some of the small ones are pretty sharp!

Pink

I never found anything of that chicken drumstick I 'lost'. I really wouldn't concern yourself about the loss of teeth. Grin

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 27/04/2016 21:09

I think I'm more worried about it than Harry - biscuits are no trouble!

Here he is looking his best!
