Desperate - Ideas for my very poorly cat - any vets?

Very poorly 9 month old cat - had high temperature and feeling rubbish for 10 days or so. Multiple vet visits. Normal Antibiotics and Metacam given with only short term improvement. In at vets all day yesterday for blood tests - negative for feline versions of HIV and leukaemia. High platelet count - vet wondered about a different sort of infection and gave a different antibiotic injection plus steroid, back to vets on Monday but still looking awful today. Extremely lethargic, and weak. Eating the odd mouthful here and there, but nothing more.
Anyone got any ideas of what this could be?
And also what could I tempt her with food wise? She really needs to eat something.

Have they tested for FIP?

noarguments · 11/04/2016 09:32

What's FIP - they were really looking for leukaemia or Feline HIV, I think. I'll mention FIP today (they always love a patient who comes armed with a list of possible diagnoses!!!). Is it Feline Parvo?

Oh dear, wish I hadn't googled it. Sad

I'm sorry - my cat had it and I'd never heard of it. Hope it's not that but it might be worth a mention. Flowers

cozietoesie · 11/04/2016 09:57

Fingers crossed that they'll admit her for some supportive therapy.

Let us know how things go?

noarguments · 11/04/2016 12:11

Admitted to have some fluids and hopefully some food later. Picking her back up tonight. It appears that the antibiotic Friday's vet said they'd administered on Friday (a different one, targeting different things) may not have been given after all. That's the one that doesn't work well with metacam so we weren't allowed to give her any of the one thing that seemed last week to help a bit. I'm beyond furious. Today's vet seemed also quite Shock about this, and said she couldn't comment (which I guess means the first vet messed up). She's now a whole load weaker and iller than she was, so is less likely to recover even if she does get those ABs today. Angry Angry Sad Sad

that is awful! Poor little cat. Is the cat in pain?

loobylou10 · 11/04/2016 12:45

Poor little thing. Sending positive thoughts for today

cozietoesie · 11/04/2016 12:47

Don't be too despondent. A little bit of supportive therapy - particularly fluids - can really turn them around sometimes.

BoatyMcBoat · 11/04/2016 16:02

Oh poor little thing.

Cats are remarkably tough though, and if she's got the right sort of tratment now, she can still pull through. My tiny kitten (this was years ago) which had FIE and was expected to die, got to a point where all she could take was a wetting round her mouth of the Brand's essence. I knew she was going to die. I sat up all night with her giving her the essence. The vet took her in when they opened, put her on a drip, and did God knows what to her. When I turned up the next day after work, the first thing I heard when I opened the door was the loudest miaow! The nurses were giggling and saying she'd been like that for several hours. She almost leapt into my arms when they opened her cage! She was like a different cat.

She'd been getting worse for weeks and weeks by then, and was the size of an 8 week old despite being twice that age. My favourite cat ever; the memory is making me smile. Thank you xx

FelicityR313 · 11/04/2016 16:05

Aw Boaty - what a lovely kitten!

cozietoesie · 11/04/2016 16:15

Lovely, Boaty. Smile

cozietoesie · 11/04/2016 16:19

PS - I'd not be in too much of a rush to get her home tonight if the new vet says, for example, that she could do with a bit more in-house therapy. See what they say.

Good luck.

pterobore · 11/04/2016 16:20

Have the vets also considered keeping her in (if they provide overnight care) as they can monitor get bloods, temp and keep the drip in. I really hope she picks up and is just fighting some random infection

pterobore · 11/04/2016 16:21

Ha cross post cozie! If she copes well at the vets sometimes it's the best place to be.

FelicityR313 · 11/04/2016 20:32

How is the cat?

noarguments · 11/04/2016 20:44

Aw thanks for all your thoughts. Picked Lola up this evening - much improved, temperature back to within normal limits, more alert, more interested in food. Still very weak. Hoping its a combination of fluids today and long-awaiting antibiotics, but vet has warned this improvement could only be temporary. Catheter still in for more therapy tomorrow if needed - back to vets first thing. But she's very happy to be home for now. Thanks for positive stories - everything crossed that we're on the up. Its so upsetting to see them so poorly. x

I'm glad she's improved. Shall she be offered some tasty tidbits tonight? Smile

noarguments · 11/04/2016 20:51

on the menu tonight, a gourmet choice of:
convalescent cat food (given to us by vet)
super expensive Sheba (or whatever it is) cat food
roast chicken
cat milk

on my menu: Wine

Vinorosso74 · 11/04/2016 20:56

Ah glad she's a bit brighter. At least she can relax a bit more at home and have cuddles.
Enjoy your Wine

BoatyMcBoat · 12/04/2016 08:39

Hope she's still good this morning.

Is it that it's cheaper to send her home and have her back in the morning? If you have insurance, it's worth asking persuading them to keep her in.

We can't afford insurance for our cats these days, and one of them's getting a bit doddery... Blush

cozietoesie · 12/04/2016 09:01

I was recommended to buy some (very expensive) food from the vet for Seniorboy.

Next Door's cat liked it just fine apparently. Grin

noarguments · 12/04/2016 09:29

We're not insured either - one of things that I've been thinking we ought to do - in fact we thought we'd put a bit aside in a "vet" account for such occasions, but never did. Oh well.
I don't think they do overnight stays, otherwise they would have suggested it I'm sure. However they've taken her back in this morning for a second day on fluids. She still seems much better, although her temperature was slightly raised again, and the vet said they often pick up short term, only to dip again. Picking her up tea time - see how she is then - we can't go on like this indefinitely obviously.....

She really improved after those fluids yesterday didn't she though? Did they get any food/meds into her as well?

toldmywrath · 12/04/2016 18:52

How is your little cat today noarguments ? I've been thinking about her.
