The Shitten has started crapping on our bed again...

She is 4 years old now, and for the last two years (since we moved house) she has:

Pissed lavishly over a sofa, which we had to throw out

Shat in the hall regularly, on the bath mat regularly

Pissed on our bed, the kids' beds

Shat on the kitchen work surface.

For the last four or five months, she has been much better - we have had the odd turd on the bath mat, but nothing more than that, but over the past month or so, she has been shitting, regularly, on our bed. Where she and the other cat sleep. I am at the end of my tether with her. This is now almost a daily occurrence, and I am paying around £100+ per month to get the duvets cleaned. She is not (currently) peeing on the duvet, just shitting on it. (Not that that makes it better.)

We have a new sofa and I daren't let her in the sitting room unsupervised in case she ruins this one. I have had enough, but no idea what to do now. If I rehome her, she is likely to do the same at her new home, and end up back in rescue every few months as people get sick of living with cat shit and piss everywhere. But maybe she would be better if she could go outside?

She has been checked out by the vet, but not recently. She is on special urinary wet food, to help against cystitis, and special urinary dry food to counter stress. We have tried Feliway and she shits next to the diffuser. We have tried antidepressants, which just made her worse. We have two litter trays and have tried various types of litter.

She is a sweet little cat - not particularly affectionate, but has never scratched or bitten anyone. She is playful when it suits her, and entirely obsessed with food - she would eat all day long if she could, and is quite overweight.

I don't know what to do next, and I don't think the vet will either. I could confine her to the bathroom and litter tray while I am at work (she's an indoor cat). She and the other cat currently only have access to our bedroom, two bathrooms and the kitchen during the day. It seems unfair to restrict the other cat's access further. I have tried three litter trays and one didn't get used, so I got rid of it.

Does anyone have any ideas? We are only a short distance from Battersea, and I am so tempted just to take her there and say, please rehome her. I cannot take any more of this. I don't like giving up on animals, and I don't want her to spend her life going from home to home, in and out of rescue, as I think she would just get worse. She is a very pretty grey cat, so I think she would get rehomed quickly, but would then end up back being rehomed a week later. But I don't know what else to do.

I have been completely honest with the rescue place about the problem, and have chosen this place because it is small, and they clearly genuinely love cats. (I am hoping that it isn't too small that they don't have space for her.) And yes, absolutely I will be there for her if they decide to PTS. I hope she will be happier as an only cat with access to outside, and that she will have a nice life. She is the sweetest cat - I just can't cope with the toiletting issues (I'm paying over £100 per month to have duvets cleaned at the moment).

And now I am wondering how the other cat will cope with the loss of his "companion"...

The other cat will probably be just fine by the way. Maybe a little looking for her but that will likely pass soon enough.

GeorgeTheThird · 03/04/2016 10:48

It's tough. But you can't go on like this, you've given it your best shot.

WalkingBlind · 03/04/2016 16:36

My cat (who has been with the other 2 for her entire life) will pee in any place where they sleep to claim it as her territory so they won't sleep there anymore. Hope she does better as an only cat. I think you've coped with much more than most so don't feel guilty Flowers

An update on the Shitten.

I have rehomed her with my friend's parents. They adore her and she seems happy being an only cat, particularly living with two elderly people who are home all day and like nothing better than playing with her. There have been no poo incidents since she went to her new home (although it is early days, just over a week ago). I was completely honest with them over her problems, and they said they would be fine with her, and thought she would probably be happier as an only cat. They are keeping her in for a few weeks and then letting her venture outdoors.

The journey was traumatic for both of us - 4 1/2 hours on a train. I cried for most of it, and she yowled. But hopefully this is the happy ending and new life that she needs.

Our other cat looked for her a bit, and was mewly for a few days, but seems fine now.

I'm still quite sad about not having her around, but will visit her in the summer to see how she has settled in.

Well that sounds promising for her - she's been given the chance so, hopefully, she can make the best of it. Shall they be dropping you the occasional comment on her progress? Smile

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/05/2016 00:22

Yes, Cozie - and photos. Smile

It sounds a much better set up for her. You did the right thing for her.

Savagebeauty · 30/05/2016 07:57

I am laughing at her shitting next to the Felliwell which is hailed as the holy grail on her. "Fuck you Felliwell" I hear the cat saying!!! Grin
Well done for coping so long with that awful situation. I had a pissing cat for a year which was just draining

Roystonv · 30/05/2016 07:58

So glad this got resolved and hope all continues well at the new home.

msrisotto · 30/05/2016 08:00

Good call OP. My sister had to rehome her cat for the same reason and the problems disappeared when she was in a different situation.

Sanchar · 30/05/2016 08:30

I'm glad to hear rehoming has worked out well, so far!

Glad you didn't follow the quite bizarre advice to have her pts over what was quite obviously psychological problems😽😺

cozietoesie · 30/05/2016 09:19

I'm pleased for her so far. Smile

How has DD2 reacted to her absence? Is she coping?

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/05/2016 09:39

DD2 doesn't seem to give a flying fuck, to be frank, Cozie. Hmm There was lots of wailing when she was going to go, but DD2 didn't even say goodbye to her. I'm the one who keeps crying. Sad

It's also nice for the Shitten that she has someone around all day, to throw her knitted tomato for her to chase and bring back, and to play with the "red dot".

OreoHeaven · 30/05/2016 09:45

Fingers crossed the Shitten settles in well. I think you've found her a wonderful home.

Micah · 30/05/2016 09:54

I did the same thing. Sibling cats, apparently close.

Honestly being an only cat made him so much happier, and completely cured the issue. It was a last resort as we thought they'd miss each other, but it was exactly the opposite.

You've done the right thing.

cozietoesie · 30/05/2016 10:15

It's been a good result then. You all were lucky - to be able to find the right home for her, it seems. (It doesn't always pan out that way.) She has a good chance now though. Smile

Fishcake72 · 30/05/2016 10:23

So glad it's turned out well. I put up with my 'shitten' for sixteen years! His three companions were all clean as can be. Nightmare. I loved him but it was a relief when he finally went to the Bridge Blush

Toddlerteaplease · 30/05/2016 10:29

Let her outside Into the garden if you can?

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/05/2016 11:35

Yes, Toddler, she will go out in a few weeks, once she has settled into her new home.

OP posts:
CallMeColin · 30/05/2016 11:41

Definitely all sounds territorial. I expect she'll be fine as a singleton, especially if she can go out. You did the right thing op, she sounded really unhappy before. Must be nice having a clean house again.

RubbishMantra · 30/05/2016 13:58

Ah, what nice people to take in The Shitten.

And hats off to you for having the patience with her, and finding her a new home.

May I ask, is she a particular breed?

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/05/2016 15:59

No particular breed, but she is a long haired grey and pink cream tortie, and is most beautiful. And the sweetest natured cat I've ever had - she has never scratched or bitten anyone.

OP posts:
SecretNutellaFix · 30/05/2016 16:11

I hope she'll be very happy as a singleton- some cats are happy to be part of a bigger group, Shitten, just wasn't one of them.

It sounds like she has what she wants- adoring adults to serve her and indulge every whim.

ocelot41 · 30/05/2016 18:11

I think that rehoming may be an option as an outside cat or as a single cat. I wouldn't have her PTS
