post spay!

I am such a complete novice when it comes to cats :-(

Girl cat was spayed today. We picked her up about 3pm. She'd had nothing to eat since 550 last night. And still doesn't want anything (cone doesn't help, but we offered from a spoon and she's not wanting)

I don't think she's drunk much either - though did notice she had wet in the carrier on way home so I've cleaned that up.

They're not normally allowe din my room (boy cat was done last summer) but I'm thinking of setting her up with food and litter up there on her own tonight as she's still drowsy, to keep her away from her brother.

What do I need to look out for? When do I worry about food and drink?

She's got a follow up Friday afternoon. I feel terribly guilty for putting her through this now, although I know deep down its better than kittens.

Well she was fine :-) and she's eaten a little more even with the cone. She's sitting on the cushion on the sofa with her back to us still though! And she's so skinny with no fur on that side! It's like a chicken leg Grin

Awwww. She'll likely give you the fish-eye (or fish-shoulder as the case may be) until you take the collar off. When she'll be fine. It's a good job they don't bear grudges for such things. Smile

Ah, we just had our 2yo spayed last Tuesday. She did eat but Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday she was very grumpy and quite off colour. I was borderline calling the vets again but on Friday she perked up considerably. I can only assume the GA made her feel quite bad and it took a few days to get over it. She's still grumpy though as every time we tried to take the collar off she went straight for the stitches, so it's still on 8 days later Grin

Like yours, ours is a skinny little thing and she's lost weight even over those few days (she was barely over a good weight when we had her done). Fingers crossed she feels better soon.

She's "allowing" DS1 to sit near her and stroke her head. I'm glad she's eaten and drunk, that was what was worrying me. I'm impressed how much her brother has now left her alone. Hopefully the check up Friday goes well as well, as I'm back at work etc Monday (purposely arranged this for half term so I was here for the first few days post op)

Yousaff has your girl had any fur regrowth yet? DS1 is getting anxious about it!

YouSaffBridge · 17/02/2016 14:45

A teeny tiny bit. It's like fuzz now after a week. It looks ridiculous!

TooAswellAlso · 17/02/2016 15:01

I wonder how long it takes to grow back? I didn't realise how thick or fluffy her coat was!

TooAswellAlso · 17/02/2016 15:02

I also wasn't expecting such a HUGE patch to be shaven!

Glad she's getting better, we boiled a chicken breast and shredded it up when cool when ours were done. Were told they can feel a bit queasy after the ga so something bland would be good. Now they both love boiled chicken breasts as a treat haha.

YouSaffBridge · 17/02/2016 15:23

Me neither - it's enormous! How old is your cat? I know ours is a bit older than normal to be spayed, I don't know if that changed the incision they had to do. But no, I wasn't expecting her to come back half bald!

TooAswellAlso · 17/02/2016 17:12

Q the vet recommended chicken too, but we offered tuna which went down a treat. Bet I'm nagged again for that!

Yousaff she is 9 months and just under 4kg

My cats were done mid November. I would say their fur has only just really properly grown back. It seems to take a while.
It was hugely stressful. We weren't given two collars and one cat licked the glue off and had to be stapled! Shock
BUT without the op they could never have gone out and I would have worried forever they might sneak out.

cozietoesie · 17/02/2016 17:34

I can only guess that the vet doing the procedure likes to know from the start that they have ample room to work with rather than making the shave real small and perhaps having to have another go with the clippers and re-disinfect etc halfway through. One of the vets who post might comment, though.

When Seniorboy last had a shave - the last time the vet tried to take blood so maybe about 3 or 4 years ago - he looked positively sculpted even though he's short-haired. At least, because he spends his days basking in warmth probably, he didn't get the temporary dark patch that most animals with the Himalayan gene acquire after shaving.

YouSaffBridge · 17/02/2016 18:45

Poor SaffCat is only 3.1kg Sad

TooAswellAlso · 17/02/2016 18:47

I think you're right about the bigger area - when I had my csections I had a massive patch more than they needed shaved which itched like buggery when it grew back

The cone has been great, last time boy cat didn't have one and locked himself open again - he had to have injections and more glue and a collar naughty boy!

The wound looks clean and dry. I worry as she's barely moved from the chair all day, but I'm hoping she's ok. Will offer more cat food later with the cone off, and some extra tuna to keep her food intake up.

Wolfiefan I am glad we've done it - I want them to go out if they want to, and not put her at risk at all. At the moment they've spent their whole 9 months indoors and keeping them away from open doors, but this would mean more freedom for them and the kids.

They've bought the cats harnesses and leads for when she's well, so they can take them for walks and show them outside! Don't think they want the cats to go out bless them! (Our last cat was poisoned by someone outside so I can understand their worry)

Just to keep everyone updated, girl cat is doing wonderfully. She's managing to eat with the collar on, and has had a few moments of being like her old self more. She tires quickly and is definitely more sleepy than usual, but happily laid on DS1 today for a big cuddle and has been fine in her usual surroundings with her brother (so I've had some sleep!)

I'm not sure her toileting is back to normal yet, the litter tray is definitely not being used as much, but we have a check Up tomorrow so I'm sure it's fine.

Thank you all for the hand holding!

Glad she's improving. Smile

MissFlight · 18/02/2016 21:06

Its good to hear she's doing well Smile

cozietoesie · 18/02/2016 21:12

She'll likely be ecstatic to have the dreaded cone removed. Is tomorrow her check up?

cozietoesie · 18/02/2016 21:12

Sorry - just saw that it is. Good luck at the vets. Smile

TooAswellAlso · 18/02/2016 21:19

Yup, tomorrow afternoon. I'm hoping the vet says the cone can go, but they indicated on Tuesday it would be a 7-10 day thing so not holding out much hope.
