Heart scan

Just sat in the waiting room of the local vet hospital with my lovely boycat, about to book him on for a heart scan as they discovered a murmur at his recent check up.

He's only 7 so am hopeful it's nothing serious for now and hopefully nothing serious at all..

Just posting for a little hand hold really - I know it's unlikely to be anything awful but he's only been with us 18 months and he is an absolute darling!

Poor lad.

What info have they given you already about the murmur?

(My own Seniorboy has had one for a good few years, by the way. He's 21. )

This scan should hopefully give all the info needed although my vet did say that something like 80% of murmurs turn out to be nothing serious. She also said I could put the scan off for a bit (as it's about £450) bit I think I'd rather know now than later.. If something happened, I'd always be blaming myself.

I'm sure he'll be fine and he's being very calm here in the waiting room.. we were ridiculously early for the appointment as we've had to come to a specialist hospital.

If he has a heart murmur PLEASE look at saddle thrombus and keep an eye out for any symptoms. We've just lost our family cat to it and I'm absolutely traumatised

Sorry for your loss, Power From a quick Google, that sounds particularly hard on the cat.. I will read up on this.

As well as the scan, they'll be looking at his blood pressure to ensure things matchbox as well as taking some blood for tests to make sure there isn't more going on.

At the booking in, she did say that it's a significant murmur so definitely doing the right thing getting him checked. I only hope they don't sedate although I'm not overly worried but they can normally do it all without, so here's hoping!

So he is broadly ok although he's got a slightly dodgy valve which isnt closing properly which is causing a bit of problems and the cord which pulls the valve is a bit long as well which isnt great. However, he doesn't have any thickening of the walls or fluid or anything really bad so basically, £630 down and I just need to keep an eye on him!

Peace of mind can be quite expensive but totally worth it

I'm glad it's no worse. He sounds as if he has every chance of making old bones.
