Disposing of cat litter

I'm getting an indoor cat soon and live in a first floor flat. I just wanted to know how I can dispose of cat litter that doesn't involve -

a) flusing litter down the bog and possibly blocking it (I rent privately)
b) having smelly litter sitting in the kitchen bin for a few days until it's full and I change it (council will only take 3 bags once a fortnight)
c) Leave it in a bag in shed and it stink that out instead
d) get a dustbin specifically for cat litter. The only issue with this is that if it only contains cat litter it will be really heavy and binmen possibly won't take it.

Unless i'm being a bit dim, what other option(s) are there?

I make soiled litter and eg solids (poo or pee balls) into quick little parcels with some old newspaper - one double sheet of broadsheet or two (4 pages worth) of tabloid, put them in a supermarket poly bag and put in the bin every day or two. Works fine for us and old newspaper is still very easy to get hold of from eg family, friends or colleagues.

The bags often have some other rubbish mixed in so aren't too heavy.

PS - I suspect that much depends on the type of litter you'll have to use. We have always had natural earth clumping which lends itself to that treatment.

I use scented dog poo bags and put in our bin. Doesn't seem to smell...but bin in utility so quite out the way. Often put straight in outside bin. It's just one of those things (chores) you get used to

Scented nappy bags?

I use scented nappy bags and put them straight out into the communal bins. Any poo gets sifted out first and flushed down the loo.

I remove cat poo and flush it down the loo every day. Every 2-3 days I then tie up the whole litter bag and pop it in the outside bin.

Same as LJ. Scoop the poo and flush it down the loo everyday. Then tie it all up and put in the bin minus the poo every couple of days.

My cat is a little bugger though, as soon as I remove a poo.....he does another one!

Make sure you get lightweight cat litter as there is a huge difference in weight compared to different brands/types.

Get one of these bit cheaper on amazon. Keep being tempted but have two and one hides poo if they don't approve of the provision.

So does mine lol. And when I change the litter have to fight them off to get in, even though they've just gone.

Once just in between me removing the soiled bag and putting new one in, he managed to pee in the empty tray!

The litter kwitter looks brilliant (like Mr Jinx!) has anyone got one? Does it work?!

Never tried it - if they show approval for a tray, I breathe a sigh of relief and have a cup of coffee. (I pick my battles.)

Thanks everyone, i've got some litter tray liners too so i'll use those and gloves.

I put poo and wet litter in a supermarket plastic bag and it goes straight into the outside bin, never noticed a smell. I use wood litter as that's what the rescue used so I just carried on.

Doesnt your flat have communal outdoor bins to be emptied by the bin men? Do you really have to keep all your rubbish in your flat for two weeks?

I flush poo, use one of those litter scoops so you can just pick out the poo. As pp said, bag up the whole lot every few days and chuck in the big outdoor bin.

I'm on the 2nd floor and have 3 delightful moggies, I use a biodegradable clumping litter, it means I just have to remove the clumps and flush them down the loo, its designed for flushing so as long as i don't put too much down inmone go it won't clog, I get mine from zooplus although theres a similar one in pets at home

I use pets at home ultra fine clumping. I remove all the balls of wee and lumps of poo.. small bin liner goes straight in the bin, and I change the whole litter every two or three days (they go outside but are shut in all night).

I do flush poos down the loo but have to be careful not to clog up the pipes... I used to use wood pellets but the loo blockage that resulted was not nice!

I remove the poo and flush that straight down the loo, provided it doesn't have too much litter stuck to it. Scoop out clumps of pee into scented nappy or dog poo bags, and stick them in the bin every night when I take the dog out for his last toilet as I also live in a flat and there is a litter bin on the street :)

I use wood pellet litter and cheap scented nappy sacks. Lumps are fished out and put into the outside bin. When I change the litter (not very often as they hardly ever use the tray) I bag it and put it into the bin.
