Adopting a 7 year old

I took dd (1yo) to a cat shelter on Christmas Eve with full intentions of reserving a 3 year old boy I'd seen the previous day. When we introduced him to dd he just wasn't too keen on being around her so we had a look around and came across a beautiful black and white 7 year old girl who warmed to us both straight away. Dd instantly gave her a kiss on the mouth (her new habit that I'm trying to stop) and also hugged her and the cat was purring and enjoying every second. She was so loving and gorgeous. The age factor put me off but I can't not take her after seeing how good she was with dd.

Any tips on adopting an older cat? Am I doing the right thing? I'm so excited but a bit clueless at the same time - she'll be my first cat!

Poltercontentacat. Smile

Remember not to get (if possible) over-excited by her presence in the house. Despite her behaviour at the rescue, she might still spend this evening under the sofa. Wink This is big for you but absolutely huge for her. Smile

Looking forward to the pics.

My adult ragdoll rescue. Changed his name, had to as his old one had negative connotations. Hid from me for a week, fell in love with my child with disabilities, is now his seizure alert cat.

Rescues are best

Well she's home and currently watching peppa pig with dd Smile

She appears to be settling in absolutely fine and is following me everywhere. She's not used her cat litter tray yet though. Will she know what to do? I showed it to her straight away and she climbed in.

Well that's outstandingly good going for the first few hours out of rescue. They normally hide under furniture for at least a day. She looks completely relaxed. Yes if she's seen her tray she will know what it is and where it is.

She is lovely! Glad she is enjoying Tv, must be so nice to be warm in a home in winter and away from other cats so she can sleep and sleep and relaxxxxxxxx.

Huntercat was like that, utterly nonchalant despite my careful preparation for keeping him in one quiet room while he adjusted to us and the kids. He was having none of it and set off boldly round the house quite happily.

cozietoesie · 30/12/2015 17:40

Wow. What a relaxed cat for a new arrival! Smile

Vinorosso74 · 30/12/2015 17:41

She looks lovely! Hope she settles in well-judging by photo it looks a good start.

jamesdeandaydream · 30/12/2015 17:45

I don't know any different because she's my first cat but she does seem very comfortable! Dd just kissed her and she didn't even flinch! Very happy Smile

Aw she sounds lovely. The perfect cat for your household! She is gorgeous :)

Zooplus say they take about 3-5 days to arrive but it's usually been 3 days for me.

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/12/2015 19:33

She looks like she's taking it in her stride. It must be so nice for her to be out of the shelter too.

I'm so happy for you all.

JimmyGreavesMoustache · 30/12/2015 19:35

she's lovely, congratulations!

cozietoesie · 30/12/2015 19:55

I forget. Did you decide on a name for her?

Wolfiefan · 30/12/2015 19:57

Gorgeous puss. Found her rightful place.
She looks like a short haired version of our old girl. She was 19 when we lost her.
Wishing you many many happy years together.

Wizwo · 30/12/2015 20:02

That's a super relaxed cat, congratulations!

Penfold007 · 30/12/2015 20:09

Oh my she is gorgeous. She is a mature cat who has fallen on all four paws, she will be fine Wine

jamesdeandaydream · 30/12/2015 23:35

I think dd is having an allergic reaction to the cat Sad.

She's woke up crying with a red rash on her chest and seems to be wheezing. She's had a cold and cough for the past couple of weeks but not like this. What do I do?

OP posts:
thecatneuterer · 30/12/2015 23:39

Oh no! I really don't know what you do. It would be awful to return the cat if it's unrelated. Wait and see? See a doctor? I really have no idea. Hopefully someone will have better advice soon.

Vinorosso74 · 30/12/2015 23:41

I'm no expert but if it was an allergy wouldn't she have reacted sooner or when she met cat in shelter??
However as an aside if your DD has been ill I would keep a close eye on her.

Wolfiefan · 30/12/2015 23:43

It could be unrelated.
For now. Damp dust and Hoover daily. Wash hands after touching cat. DD doesn't touch cat for now. Cat kept out of bedroom.
There is something I think called petal cleanse which is wipes but can't remember if that's cats or dogs.
My sister is allergic to cats. We had 4 at one point!
Does DD have a history of eczema or asthma? Any other allergies?

jamesdeandaydream · 30/12/2015 23:43

Her cough has been worse tonight but I thought it was just coincidence until the rash has appeared. Her eyes are runny too and she's tugging at her ears. I don't know what to do.
