So I have always had dogs and/or cats, however I haven't had a kitten for about 16 years. Bought home the cutest little girl at 6pm tonight, she was fine when I visited her, but she has been in her cat carrier since bringing her home and spits at me when I try and remove her. She is only 10 weeks and obviously left her mum and siblings this evening so is bound to be scared, but is this normal ?. I have taken the lid off given her a cuddle and put her back in, the door is open and I have covered it in a towel so she feels secure, am I best just leaving her ?. Going to pop her in the kitchen tonight with food and her litter tray and the radio on for company.

Also what age should she be chipped and neutered ?

Well it's not unusual for kittens to be very upset when removed from their mother and siblings (which is why we only home small kittens in pairs). The spitting isn't totally normal. What sort of set up did she come from? Was it a family home where the kittens were handled a lot?

I see she is being stroked in one of the photos. Was that before bringing her home? If she was happy to be stroked then, then I'm sure it's just a matter of time before she comes round.

Definitely leave her in the carrier if that's where she feels safe.

You can chip as soon as you like, but most people do it at the same time as neutering. We recommend neutering at four months.

Thanks, was a couple whose children where away during the week but home at weekends, however they did have a young niece that visited. She was more than happy to have a cuddle in the house. The photo of her is her being cuddled by my daughter when we bought her home. She didn't like me going in the front of the cat carrier and spits, she did let us pick her up if we took the top off. She probably felt a bit cornered when we went through the front. She has now hidden herself under the sideboard so I have just left here there, radio on low and the door open to get carrier.

She has now been under the sideboard since 11pm last night Sad

Can you put food and water near the sideboard? I would just leave her until she feels happier, can you shut the door to the room she is in and leave her for a bit? Let her get used to the house one room at a time.

She will come around. I bought an 8 week old kitten home 2 months ago, yours could be his sister, they are identical. He was so timid and hid for hours behind our living room unit and wouldn't go near anybody. Forward on 2 months and we now have the most affectionate kitten going. He likes to be carried round like a baby, he likes getting as close to your face as he possibly can and regularly comes for 'kisses' which is something I've never experienced with a cat before.

She will start getting more adventurous as time goes on

Thanks all. I have put wet and dry food along with kitten milk and water all by the side of the sideboard along with her little crate. go her out earlier, she spat a bit but we had a little cuddle and she sat on my lap, then she went back under the sideboard but she didn't run she had a little mooch about first while I just spoke to her. I am sure she will be fine.

She is adorable. Sounds like it's going better today.

Curiouserandcuriouser30 · 12/10/2015 14:53

Yeah that sounds like she will be fine, she's just looking for somewhere she feels safe while she gets used to the new environment. Enjoy your new kitten!

Much more confident now, we got her out again after school and DD got one of those cat teasers, she happily played for ages and climbed up my jeans to get on the sofa. Really come out imbed shell now.?

That didn't take long! She was just showing you she's a feisty little girl who'll fight if necessary Grin. She's adorable.
