Surgery to remove thyroid age 14 - worried!

My lovely cat has had a reaction to Vidalta (face scratching) so I've made an appt to take her back to the vet to discuss options. She's been on it 3 months and put on weight and isn't as hyper, but suddenly seems older and like she's not enjoying life as much as she was. She has always been very active but now just goes outside and sits on the lawn which is so out of character as she would usually be busy all the time. She sits hunched up staring at me at times and I'm wondering if she's in pain or if this is just part of the ageing process. Will obvs discuss with vet but am worried about the prospect of surgery in view of this. Anyone able to give any advice please?

All the cats that have this surgery are old, the oldest one I have done is 18. Has your vet mentioned the option of radioactive iodine?

Thanks Lonecat. Yes the vet mentioned Iodine, which sounds I understand is the gold standard treatment, however the cost of the procedure and distance mean it's not possible.
