Help! Old cats not taking to new ones.

Hello, I rehomed some cate that were in a bit of a desperate situation about 5 weeks ago now. They are a 2 year old neutered male and a 5 month old female.
I introduced them slowly and carefully to my existing cats, making sure to give my resident cats lots of attention.
My resident cats are a 3 year old neutered male and a 2 year old spayed female.
At first everything seemed to be going well but my resident cats have started to spend less time in the home.
The female was particularly soppy and would follow you everywhere (even to the bathroom).
I am worried that my cats are stressed out, I don't want to re home the new cats as they will have been stresses out from the move already and in any case I don't believe in rehoming animals willy nilly. But I want my old loving cats back.
What can I do to make them feel more comfortable in their own home?

I don't know about strategies, and after five weeks it's a bit late for that sort of thing anyway, although Feliway might help of course. I just wanted to say that five weeks isn't that long and it really is just time. I'm sure they will all adjust eventually, they always seem to (apart from some cats that just hate all other cats, but that doesn't seem to be the case here). Just give it time.

It was lovely to you to take in the other cats.

Yes - it was indeed lovely of you to take in the other cats.

Who can tell what goes on in their minds - there will be a big reshuffling of hierarchy going on and it sounds as if things aren't actually going too badly if you're not getting spraying and hissing behaviour. For example, who knows but that the former resident cats feel happier about going out more knowing that the home fires are now being looked after by the new additions to the household?

I'd give it a bit more time. (And also, see what happens when the heating goes on for winter. Wink)

They will settle down in time, but it can take a while.

Do you have a Feliway diffuser set up?

Cats like their space when they feel a bit stressed and will become aloof until the adjustment has taken place.

If you can get them all together and dole out the Dreamies, this can help to soften the atmosphere.

How is it going, therenter ?
