Cat on a diet

Hi, not been here for a while.

Things have been going OK but this week double whammy, I have just posted the other thing separately.

Cat is 6.8 kilos and should be about 5.5. He needs to go on a diet and we will see vet about it Thursday. He always meows for food and we did feed him a lot of times a small amount and now he is overweight. Feel bad about this but felt it was what he wanted. He was a rescue cat some maybe never knew when he was full.

Thanks for any advice.

You're right to be concerned - sadly, it's a not inconsiderable problem these days. I think that current guidance is slow but sure following vet advice.

Alternatively, you could be encoouraging him to increase his calorie ouput - more exercise. Is he an active cat or a couch potato?

Wolfiefan · 22/09/2015 23:56

Are you sure that every time he meows it is for food?

cozietoesie · 23/09/2015 00:01

Possibly not, Wolfie. (Often enough, they're actualy wanting attention or activity.) Judging by the OP's two threads together, he's sounding a bit bored to me - maybe some distraction eating going on.

Wolfiefan · 23/09/2015 00:02

I wondered what you asked on the other thread and was he inside all day?

Italiangreyhound · 23/09/2015 01:08

Thanks all.

The vet said to lose it slowly and is going to recommend some 'fuller for longer' or cat equivalent. The vets has a free car weight clinic and we are booked in

He is a bit of a couch potato. I am not sure how one changes that.

Wolfiefan he does meow a lot, he is very talkative but when in the kitchen it is meowing for food, he goes to the food cupboard, rubs against it meows and watches me like a hawk, so if I am unwrapping human food he is all interested. He comes and watches when we eat and gets up close. In a way our other cat did not.

If he is bored I am not sure what he wants. When he bit dd he had just been outside, so not stuck in all day. Unfortunately biting dd is not going to get him the attention as we are all now a bit wary of him. perhaps a case of shooting himself in the foot! I wish i could speak cat, I would tell him what not to do and he could say what he wanted! I need the cat whisperer!

My cat is also on a diet (Vet put him on it!) as he was 7kg and should be 5. The vet gave us fuller for longer type food, this one: fetch.co.uk/royal-canin-feline-satiety-support-3-5kg-89855011?gclid=CJyR5cvtjMgCFUf3wgodT9EImw

I weighed out the prescribed amount the first few days and was shocked at how little was allowed, I thought there was no way that would fill him up! Surprisingly it did though, he doesn't cry for food half as often. I give him his daily amount in 3 small meals and it seems to work.

TenForward82 · 23/09/2015 17:13

Wow. There's, uh, a lot going on with this cat. How long have you had him?

I overfed my rescue too, cut down gradually, now on one pouch of wet food (half morning, half evening), no lunch, and a handful of crunchies before bed. She's down to a sensible weight now but it took a few months.

She still meows for food at lunch and I haven't given her lunch for about 3 months. It'll take time, but be patient and firm. Ignore meows for food.

Italiangreyhound · 23/09/2015 17:48

PurpleBananaPie thans - glad to hear it is going well.

TenForward82 We have had him 6 months.

re ... be patient and firm. Ignore meows for food. will do.

BTW, I say that last part as someone who briefly relapsed and started feeling her the ham out of my sandwich for part of the summer. Yeeeeeah ... she got fat again.

Now she's on a diet again and I'm in the naughty corner.

It's hard! But stick to your guns and ignore the cute cat face and the "I'm gonna die I'm so hungrreeeeeeee" meows.

Italiangreyhound · 23/09/2015 22:23

TenForward82 thanks, will do. I am quite careful with 'human' food but we do give him too much wet food, he doesn't eat the dry and I know if he were really hungry he would as it is always available.
