Spraying cat help

She's four and was spayed young. She's always sprayed, particularly new things. She has a cat flap and doesn't poo or wee in the house. Just marks things.

She's grown up with two children who are now older teenagers and they don't pull her about. No other pets.

She's quite nervous. There don't seem to be any bullying cats around but I suppose there could be. No other cat comes in through her cat flap.

Any ideas? She's not my cat. Mine is really well behaved. I'm asking for a friend who loves her but Gracie has just ruined her friend's handbag. My friend offered to replace it but her friend said not to worry. That was a relief because it was expensive. She was sure the smell would go. My friend thought: 'No it won't.'

When mine did it it was stress induced cystitis, she needs to suck some of the wee up in an oral syringe and take it to her vet for a dip.

You can buy cystease to keep it at bay but really the vet needs to confirm it.

Has she actually got a microchip catflap, limited? (Would it be possible for another cat to get into your friend's house?) And what does she have in the way of inside litter trays?

Thanks both. I'll check on the cat flap and litter tray situation and get back.

BTW cozie Nobby is doing brilliantly since he had his teeth out earlier this year. Doesn't really have many teeth left but has no problems with eating. He can't chew very well but I gave him a bit of left over steak the other night and once I'd cut it into small pieces he ate it all.

We've also started going for walks. Not on a lead, I don't want to look that mad. He was an indoor cat before I got him and he wouldn't survive the roads. He's very friendly and not scared of anything so a dog would have him because he doesn't run. Luckily nearly everyone who has a dog round here keeps it on a lead. There are a couple of off-lead dogs but they are very friendly.

He slinks ahead of me, glancing over his non-existent shoulders, to make sure I'm keeping up. He explores every single basement round the block while I stand about like a burglar's lookout. My neighbours seem to love him. I realise they view me as the local eccentric which is not really the image I want to project.

She has been tried with a litter tray but won't use it. Cat flap is micro-chip controlled. Her wee has been tested, it's not infected.

Plug-in pheromones didn't work though my friend mentioned that it smelled. I used Feliway to calm my cat when I first got him and it doesn't smell at all and it seemed to work. Maybe I'll suggest that. She's in Holland so I don't know what she bought.

I think she might have to accept that Gracie is just a sprayer.

Can she get cystease in her country? it gets good reviews.

limitedperiodonly · 18/09/2015 19:17

I'm sure she can get it online fluffy. I'll tell her.

She loves that cat but her patience is being sorely tested after a number of recent spray attacks.

Mine gets very stressed by other cats outside the house, it could be that.

So glad that Nobby is doing well. Smile

Assuming that there's no physical issue, I've always found spraying to be a sign of stress of some sort - usually another cat impacting their territory. (Seniorboy, for example, will tolerate the big stupid lumps dogs but loathes and despises other cats. My other Siamese boys have been much the same. Oneago also developed a wild and unreasoning hatred for the postie but I think he's been alone in that.)

She needs to think about what is causing the particular stress for her pet and how to alleviate it. How's her English? (In case she wants to come on here - I doubt there are many decent Dutch speakers.)

Smile
