when to pts cat with failing kidneys?

I have a 15yo cat who had blood tests three months ago that showed kidneys failing. He was put on 50mg fortecor once per day.

He stabilised initially but now is vomiting daily again. He seems happy when stroked, but I don't think there's much more treatment availabl? Could he have a higher dose of fortecor?

I don't want him to end up in pain and suffering, the vet said three months ago his kidneys were moderate failing.

I'm not keen on lots more tests due to high expense if there's no further treatment available I don't want him to go through all that stress.

Have you told the vet that he's vomiting daily? I would be guided by your vet really. If he's losing weight, and doesn't appear to have a great quality of life then it it probably time. And of course it's always better to do it a little too early than a little too late.

First of all though I would speak to your vet.

Check with your vet. Our 15yo cat is a purebreed who's kidneys started failing, and a breed where they are particularly vulnerable. After stabilising him we put on a controlled diet. He still provides the odd furball and is getting gaunt from age but he's otherwise pretty stable.

Of course, you're in a better position to assess. Good luck whichever way.

Our previous cat had kidney disease also aged 15. Similar to your cat, initially seemed better on medication but then started vomiting, stopped meds to see if condition causing vomiting or meds. Turned out to be medication causing the vomiting - vet suggested change meds and add anti- sickness meds too, but we opted to stop medication as felt it was distressing him having lots of meds. Kept him on renal diet food.
He was gradually loosing weight but still appeared happy with life, until he suddenly deteriorated (around 5 months later) and we then chose to PTS.
