Anyone else's cat turn their nose up at prawns?

Both of mine just look at me like I've offended them if I offer a prawn. I thought cats found them irresistible. MCat goes mental for tuna though. Little Monsieur's just not very food orientated full stop, even though he's not underweight or anything. When he was a kitten though, he'd steal anything that might bear the slightest resemblance to a food group.

Cats are fussy buggers though.

Oh, and he gags if he smells banana!

chockbic · 26/07/2015 13:36

He likes probiotic yoghurt. I have it for my gut, and he makes googly eyes when I open it.

Rosesareblack · 27/07/2015 00:53

Neither of mine will eat prawns, even in treat foods, they pick them out and leave them.

Please don't feed grapes or raisins, they can cause kidney failure and are on the list of foods that are dangerous to cats and dogs.

MadAngryGnome · 27/07/2015 02:44

We brought home a buttery fat prawn from a restaurant for DCat once, just to see what he made of it. There was a lot of interested licking around rolling around of the prawn on the floor, then he stalked off and wouldn't have anything more to do with it.

Random foods our cats have gone mad for: polo mints, melon, curry, bread, Vaseline. Not all cat-friendly or intended for cat consumption. Grin

around = and
doh silly autocorrect Hmm

My boy can't stand any sort of fish. He's honestly repulsed by it. I've tried him various times but he literally sniffs, shudders and runs off. Chicken on the other hand...

DonnaKebab66 · 29/07/2015 11:40

My cat loves them. We often buy some (value range, mind!) just as a treat for him.

He also loves tinned tuna and will help us out with the cod (minus batter) when we're having a chippy tea.

One time though we were out of cat food and he was whinging for his breakfast. There was no tinned tuna either, all I could find remotely suitable was some tinned sardines in tomato sauce which in desparation I gave him (he needed shutting up....he's got an overactive thyroid so eats loads and is still skinny.) I wouldn't say he didn't appreciate it, he enjoyed the tomato sauce which he lapped up, leaving the sardines behind.

Mad.

Yes my two aren't terribly fussed by a prawn, but will choke one down to be polite.

They do like to be first in line for some roast whatever we're having on a Sunday though. Ditto Christmas dinner.

They love fish if I cook it for them, quite like tuna and adore strong cheddar cheese. They only ever get a tiny bit of cheese once in a while though.

susiedaisy · 31/07/2015 19:00

Yep my boy isn't fussed about prawns. But open a tin of salmon and he goes mad for it.

RubbishMantra · 01/08/2015 06:25

I don't blame Fugghetcat, bananas are 'scusting! Truly the Devil's fruit!

MCat can teleport himself instantly to the sound of a can of tuna being opened. Also coffee, if any gets spilled, he's there lapping like a maniac. He also has an obsession with Vegemite. (Then again, so do I.) Oh, and the "sausage" bit from McMuffins. He gives the hard stare until I give up the goods.

I now realise it's a myth that cats like fish. Had a cat once that didn't like prawns. This surprised me. The same cat did not like bacon either. Just for snacks if there was any left over, not a main meal.

We have had cats that like roast meat. One would stalk the oven on a Sunday once they could smell the roast cooking. They would lose interest in their food as if to say, 'you think I'm eating that when I know you've got a roast ?'

favouritewasteoftime · 01/08/2015 06:49

Please be careful with the coffee obsession - caffeine is very dangerous for cats.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 01/08/2015 07:01

Mine like them, although one was a bit unsure at first. They are both partial to a prawn cracker when we have Chinese takeaway too.

I decided to try them with a mussel a few weeks ago, they were fascinated and played football with it for about an hour but didn't want to eat it.

Pussycatbow · 01/08/2015 07:01

We call tuna "kitty cocaine" in this house.

RubbishMantra · 02/08/2015 04:10

Indeed Favourite. Coffee is whisked away from under his little black and pink nose. He only gets to scavenge drops off the floor, despite my disapproving glances. Same with the Vegemite, he and I know cats shouldn't eat it, but sometimes I look the other way, and let him have a couple of licks of my toast. I think perhaps he was an angsty Beatnik, frequenting coffee houses, in a previous life.

Our current cats don't have any interest in human food at all, and only eat kibble. Including the dogs if they get bored of their own. He just stands there and watches them!

Previous cats liked all sorts of weird things for example honey, curry and cheese. One of them was a terrible scavenger and once brought home a leg of lamb!

favouritewasteoftime · 02/08/2015 05:47

There must be something cat-attracting in the B12. I bought a tub of nutritional yeast last time I was in the UK and my cats are OBSESSED with it. They learnt how to open the cupboard where it was kept so I have to keep it in the fridge now.
