How do I stop one of my cats pooing behind the TV?!

Both our new cats had been happily using litter trays, in fact they had stopped using the one on my bedroom (hooray!) and seemed to prefer the one downstairs, but in the last couple of days there have been 3 poos behind the TV, tucked away in the corner of the room (on the carpet). Any tips on how to prevent this becoming the norm please?

Sunshine talks good sense. Maybe hang fire on the vets if Sparky is otherwise ok.
The TV is probably in a room where you all gather so it could be a prized space. Do the cats come and hang out in there with you? Maybe one feels comfy in there and the other doesn't. Do they all get playtime?

Aargh, just wrote a long, long reply and it's vanished! In summary:
Upstairs litter tray (2) moved downstairs and now being used by other cat Pixel who was already using Tray 1.
Vet said Sparky's issues are likely to be behavioural but gave her anti inflammatory jab and medicine for 3 days because of possibility of blood in urine. Suggested Feliway.
New litter tray (3) placed behind TV. Sparky pooed next to it twice.
New litter placed in Tray 3. Sparky did a couple of wees in it, then this morning a poo! Hooray!
Pixel pooed in Tray 3 this evening... Hoping this won't put Sparky off! Maybe they both prefer the new litter?
The cats get playtime and enjoy being in the living room where they generally sleep during the day (and some of the night).
Right, going to post before I lose all this too!

Well done Sunny
It looks as if you're making progress and the new litter is preferred Smile

I guess the important thing is to clean the trays as often as you can so that they are always 'available' and wash any soiled areas with bio laundry detergent to break down toilet smells. Are the other litter trays private/covered? This may nake a big difference as it sounds like the one behind the tv is quite secluded

Well done Sunny. Major progress. Your cats are lucky you are such a caring owner to put thought, care and time into sorting this out. Smile

SunnyAgain · 19/07/2015 07:45

Thank you, that's kind!
All 3 trays are covered ones, and although the one behind the TV is the most secluded, both of the others are quite tucked away behind furniture. I have a Tupperware box of bio washing powder solution on constant standby for quick cleaning purposes.
The vet said to use the Feliway spray behind the TV , but this was before I had the litter tray there. I haven't used it since installing the tray, as I wasn't sure if it would discourage use of the tray or not. What do you think?

Feliway should be fine to use. It basically just creates a relaxing scent profile so reduces a cats need to create their own scent mark

SunnyAgain · 20/07/2015 16:37

Thank you. Still all good on the litter tray front, with both cats using the one behind the TV! Looks as though we'll be swapping to that type of cat litter all round. I changed from the Pettex wood pellet kind to "Worlds Best" clumping litter, incidentally.
It is such a relief not to be cleaning the carpet several times a day!

Great to hear. I'm really impressed because this sort of thing can really get you down when you're trying to sort it out. Consider yourself properly trained by the little darlings Grin

Haha, yes, I am fully under these cats' paws! I was even sleeping on the floor in my son's room for the first few nights, so they could have "their" room to themselves. My son, aged 9, said "You do realise you can't sleep here forever, don't you?", which was a good point! I am now back in my room but do feel a bit as if I am a guest there :-D

Hi sunny
I have just read this thread with interest. I have a cat who has stopped using the litter tray....
Did you change the type of litter you put in their trays?
My cat isnt peeing in one particular place so I cant use the idea of putting a litter tray down instead.

SunnyAgain · 23/07/2015 10:59

Hi Ghirly, yes changed from a wood pellet type of litter to a much finer clumping type, called Worlds Best Litter. I got it from Amazon. This one seems the best value (there are various sellers on Amazon) www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009ZUGJXS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_2&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE
I hope you manage to resolve your problem! Had you cat been happily using the litter tray previously?

Sounds like stress-related cystitis. My cat suffers from this. What happens is they get stressed, they get the cystitis, they go in their litter box and they start associating that litter box with a burning pain (the cystitis pain). So they get scared to use the box. You need to buy two whole new litter boxes that are a different shape and different colour to the original ones and preferably place them in a different spot. This breaks their paranoia that it is the litter box causing their pain as they perceive it as a different item. This is my learning after many years of stress-related cystitis and literally thousands of pounds spent replacing our carpet several times (you can never truly get the smell out). The pinky toned urine you write about is a dead giveaway, as is compulsive licking of their nether regions. Hope this helps.
